Nice Kerry interview in the Indian Press
Kerry was in India earlier this week and in Pakistan today. The interview followed the terrorist attack that might derail the proposed talks between the two countries.

(Imagine not one question on Sarah Palin, John Edwards or Scott Brown!)

You have come at a time when India has just suffered a terrorist attack and just after India proposed foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan. There is a view here that there is no point talking when Pakistan is not doing enough to crack down on groups inimical to India. Your views?

Let me begin by first expressing condolences from everybody in America for what happened in Pune... we understand what that feels like to your country. What is important to remember, however, is terrorists do these things in order to prevent good things from happening between governments, between people. Terrorists don’t want India and Pakistan to succeed in having a better relationship. Terrorists don’t want a secular government to succeed and be strong in India. I think it is very very important not to give in to feelings that one country or the other is not doing enough yet. It is important to sit down and talk about what more needs to be done. If you don’t talk about it, things get worse. Can Pakistan do more? Absolutely, yes. And many of us have had those conversations and will continue to have those conversations... We respect the Prime Minister’s decision to have a conversation about the needs of the region and the needs of India. I think it is courageous leadership. My hope is that India and Pakistan will have these talks and that these talks will produce better cooperation from here.

<snip>
The US Director of National Intelligence has said Pakistan views some of these groups as part of its “strategic arsenal” against India. Do you agree?

Historically, they have been. We all know how they were founded. We have partial responsibility because we helped them in the development of the Taliban to take on the USSR in Afghanistan and we worked with the ISI and the ISI worked with them. Then it was all one focused Cold War effort. And in the end of the Cold War, unfortunately the United States turned its focus elsewhere and the problem didn’t go away. So, we have to help deal with it. But fundamentally, Pakistan needs to decide where it is going, what kind of country it wants to be and what kind of relationships it wants in this region. And you know there is no place for state-sponsored terrorism by anybody, by any country.

1. Absolutely brilliant from Kerry about why
terrorists do what they do and they shouldn't hold anyone back from Peace Talks. I hadn't heard that about the terrorism in Pune.

2. Here answers here on so many things are so honest, sensible
I really like that his comments here and at home in the Senate are extremely consistent - as is what he has said in Pakistan.

10. Is there anything more cowardly than sneak attacks on innocent civilians?
If these assholes had a real cause, they should fight in open combat
like real men with balls. But these bombers are just cowards hiding in darkness
like cockroaches.

4. Kerry told Pakistan's Zadari that money must go through NGOs and that the 2009 audit must be done
before 2010 money is given.

ISLAMABAD – US Senator John F Kerry reminded President Asif Ali Zardari during a meeting on Tuesday that they could not release money under Coalition Support Fund (CSF) for the year 2010 before the audit of the disbursements made in 2009.

Visiting Senator Kerry accompanied with the US Ambassador here Anne W Patterson called on the President at the Presidency and reaffirmed the American commitments to continue multifaceted support to Pakistan.

But the sources informed TheNation that Senator Kerry again reminded the President that channels for the US economic assistance were very much prescribed in the relevant legislation and it was not possible to change them with an amendment. Therefore, the sources further disclosed, the visiting Senator told President in so many words that routing the US economic assistance through the government channels was not possible. The US intended to route this assistance through the non-governmental apparatus to ensure transparency, accountability and efficacy in terms of results, he maintained during his meeting with the President.
<snip>
Kerry assured the President that the US would continue to provide all possible assistance to the democratic dispensation in Pakistan in strengthening democracy, rule of law, sustainable economic development and its capability to effectively take on militants.

Nice job of reassuring them of our commitment but standing by the need for transparency.

8. India's news coverage really makes the shallowness of American media painfully obvious.

9. The sad thing is that a search of the Boston Globe, the "liberal" paper
did not cover this important trip to India and Pakistan or the highly praised speech Kerry gave at Doha. (Yet late last year, they covered that the SFRC that he chaired spent more on travel. Ignoring that it has done some very good work. I would bet that Kerry's trip to Afghanistan alone was worth the entire budget in terms of effectiveness.

12. Could that be why Senator Kerry looks so happy at these serious international conferences?
I really doubt that Larry King ever got the hint that JK was speaking of him when he spoke against politics as celebrity entertainment.

Here he was going to the Islam - US forum:
