I finally got around to watching that Obama documentary on HBO.
It was really good. Made me tear up.

I think we forget how on the brink Obama was after the whole Rev. Wright thing blew up. I thought at the time he'd be fine and was proven right. But that was as a supporter. I was blinded by my love (yeah, I'm one of those sickos who worship). Reviewing that month, though, especially through the campaigns eyes, and you get a sense that it was really dire.

Maybe that's why I'm not so willing to think Obama is done. Every time it looks like he's on the edge, he comes back stronger and better than before. I see no reason to believe we're not in the midst of something similar since Scott Brown's win.

Of course, maybe I'm blinded by my love...

1. March 2008
That was Rev. Wright month. The clips were blaring on the cable news every day, every hour. The PUMA's were pissing and moaning, and some of the head to head matchups had John McCain up 10 points.

I was a basket case all month.

Obama is a basketball fan, so I assume that he understands the importance of momentum.

3. I wanted to believe it was a non-issue.
That the media would move on and actually discuss the issues. I was wrong. That whole month, coupled with the Pennsylvania primary, sucked major ass for an Obama supporter. It did feel like things were spiraling out of control.

Then the Indiana/North Carolina primaries happened. He won big in North Carolina and almost shocked Clinton in Indiana. It was as if those two events totally erased all of March and the bad it brought to the campaign. I think he'd get his butt kicked in Kentucky & West Virginia - but once he won North Carolina (by a wider than expected margin) and almost won Indiana, it became clear he'd win the nomination.

11. The MSM would have easily torpedoed Obama with Wright in an earlier time

But thanks to the blogosphere, they could not conceal either the Clintons' ties to Wright and Rezko, or McCain's ties to his own controversial clergy, without crippling their own credibility.

getting to know Obama through his history..when the going gets tough, Pres Obama doesn't quit.

4. Just finished Game Change

How strange to realize that the two most normal players in the whole thing had the last name Obama.

On a purely objective side it was interesting to see that the handlers for McCain and Palin both had serious concerns about their candidates performance, and even more serious concerns about what would happen if they won.

6. I wish a documentary crew followed McCain around during the election.
It would be interesting to see how it really was backstage.

5. During that Rev. Wright 3 weeks of Cable Pastorbaiting,
I wasn't particularily worried, as much as dismayed by the overt racism
exhibited by the status quo news and those who were in opposition to Obama.

I felt that it was unbelievable in 2008 that the news media could be this racist,
without anyone batting an eye. The loop-D-loop of Rev Wright making him look like
an racist unamerican ogre instead of the person that he really was, someone with a long military record, who was at the White House with Bill Clinton during his time of tribulation made me ill.

13. Wright was a corpsman with LBJ for some minor operation HE had while in
the WH.

Ironically, Wright has more time in the WH than any of his critics. Heh.

9. He spent a year learning the ropes
That is normal for most Presidents. W had a little bit of an advantage because of Poppy and Dick, since they were running things and they had more experience than the Obama admin does. I still have faith in him, but I am waiting for him to take charge.

10. On March 18, 2008, I was no longer worried.
After having been SO worried for weeks and weeks because of the Wright stuff, this speech...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWe7wTVbLUU

made me feel so much better. This speech showed me that he would rather lose right...then win wrong.

15. I remember that period being so frustrating
just because I couldn't understand what the hubbub was about. I remember seeing Wright's speeches and thinking "man, I wish this guy was running for President," but thinking that maybe if Obama had gone to his church for 20 years, he might put some of Wright's ideas into action. I think we've all seen how well that's turned out.
