Reps Ellsworth and Hill mentioned as potential candidates for Bayh's seat
A Democratic source says that in the event of a vacancy, the state party could name a candidate later on. The source says to look at two current Democratic Congressman: Brad Ellsworth and Baron Hill.

Update: The filing deadline is tomorrow, not Friday, as we wrote earlier. Dem sources say Ellsworth is the candidate most likely to jump into the contest.

2. Well, there is no one else on such short notice.

Bayh really left the Dem party on a limb here. What a nasty thing to do, but not surprised.

3. They wouldn't be any better than Bayh. They might even be worse and lose.
Joe Hogsett or Joe Andrew would be the top choices IMO.

4. Hill would be much better than Ellsworth
Neither are liberal Democrats, but Hill would be a fairly reliable vote and would probably be slightly to Bayh's left. For example, although Hill is a Blue Dog, he supported the public option, voted yes on HCR, and has said he will still support comprehensive reform, even if it means passing the Senate bill.

Ellsworth, is a REALLY conservative Democrat. He voted against the stimulus. He did vote for HCR, but he was one of the Stupak-ers.

The upshot is that Ellsworth may be more electable in this environment. He's only been in Congress for a couple years, and was a former sheriff. Hill may get tarred by being a longtime member of Congress.
