Some of you may have seen the analysis piece run by the AP today assessing the President's first year in office. Unfortunately, the AP seems to have adopted the GOP's talking points rather than looking at the facts. Most notably, the analysis utterly ignores both the breadth and depth of the President's accomplishments. Despite inheriting an economy that was in the deepest recession in generations and a foreign policy that left our standing in the world in tatters and the nation less secure, the President has had one of the most successful first years in recent history. As a result of his leadership, and largely without Republican support we have:

-Passed and implemented a Recovery Act that as multiple reports have verified not only saved the economy from the brink but also funded up to 2 million American jobs.

-Provided tax cuts for 95 percent of working families.

-Rebuilt an economy that is growing for the first time in over a year.

-Cut job losses from almost 800,000 a month to 20,000 a month.

-Made the largest investment in green technology in history.

-Made the largest investment in education in history.

-Lifted the ban on stem cell research and restored science to its rightful place.

-Raised fuel standards after years of stagnation and objection.

-Ended predatory credit card practices.

-Made equal pay for equal work more than a platitude with the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

-Expanded health coverage to 4 million more low income American children with the expansion of SCHIP.

-Expanded benefits for loving couples that work at the State Department.

-Lifted the discriminatory, inhumane and unwise ban on immigration of those with HIV/AIDS.

-Started a process to end the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy to allow patriotic Americans to serve and be true to themselves while we fight two wars.

-Begun to responsibly wind down the war in Iraq.

-Implemented a new way forward in Afghanistan in the face of withering criticism from the right and the left.

-Enhanced American security by repairing our alliances and by restoring the rule of law and our standing in the world.

-Successfully managed the outbreak of the H1N1 epidemic.

-Prohibited lobbyists from serving on important boards and commissions.

-Banned federal lobbyists and political action committees from contributing to the DNC.

-Enhanced transparency by making all visitors who enter the White House and the names of those with whom they met publicly available.

And there is more change on the horizon because of the President's efforts this year:

-We've helped pass bills in Congress that will make college loans more affordable and create a cap and trade system that will make this generation a steward of the environment for generations to come.

-For the first time in over 100 years of trying, both Houses of Congress have passed comprehensive health reform bills.

Yes, there are things that still need to be done and change left to be made. But there has been great progress this year. But while we know that the press is likely to tell a particular story that fits a preferred narrative, the facts in this case tell a very different story.

These accomplishments are more striking in light of the GOP's accomplishments or lack thereof this year. We look forward to that AP analysis.

Nobody knows what it is so everyone is afraid of it. Guaranteed, the first time a Rightie Tightie sees this they will crinkle their unibrow and see only the words "Cap and trade" and that will be their argument.

4. All fine and well, BUT...
Health Care --> capitulation from the beginning to the corporate pay masters (taking single-payer off the table from day one?? Even a complete legislative rube would have known that taking the biggest issue off the table at the START would reduce your leverage in any negotiations!!!)

Health Care --> being killed on the "message" by fabricated 'death panels', 'government take-overs' and 'socialism' charges without ever mounting counter-offensive or hammering the people who made such asinine statements in the first place. The administration should have laid the unholy alliance of Frank Luntz and the entire Republican talking points Party and their backers at Fox News. Instead, they went after Fox half-assed, ignored the connection between Luntz and the words coming out of the Repuke mouths and actually had to defend themselves against something made up by The Great White Dope (death panels? really? REALLY?)

Health Care --> wasting what was supposed to be 60 votes AND WORSE YET allowing the perception to linger that the 60 votes were actually "Democrats" in the first place!!!! Ben Nelson? Blanche Lincoln? Mary Landrieux? Joe Liberman? If the 'pukes can eat their own and call them 'RINOS'to marginalize the dissent on their side of the aisle, then the Dem's should have sounded like freaking Fred Flintstone yelling at these DINOS! The bottom line is that the PERCEPTION exists that the Democrats were against the Health Care plan because they "couldn't get the bill passed with 60 Democratic Senators", when the TRUTH is that there NEVER WERE 60 DEMOCRATIC SENATORS in the first place!!! No one from the administration effectively made this point and instead went on and on about the need for Bipartisanship. That's great for election campaign ads but not so great for you know, actually GOVERNING!

The Cap-and-Trade (ANOTHER HORRIBLE NAME CHOICE BY THE WAY!!!) proposals are going to go down this EXACT SAME PATH!!! (Sorry for all the 'screaming' in this post, but I honestly feel like I am ready to pull out the remaining hair on my head already over this.)

The Obama Administration needs to focus less on the 'Bipartisanship' pipe dream and more on actually getting the Senate to end the filibuster and actually start passing legislation on substantive issues now...if not, the November elections will be a bloodbath that makes '94 a good memory...

Mr. President, PLEASE LEAD US! We sent you to D.C. to enact change, not to repeat the Democratic Party errors of the past! Grow a spine, fire Rahmn, hire someone with a pair and start getting things done. You have said you'd rather be an effective one-term president than an ineffective two-term president, but sir, you on a path to be neither...your current trajectory is that of a one-term ineffective president and possibly the reason the nation is entrusted to possibly the dumbest person in the history of national politics in the afore-referenced 1/2 term governor of Alaska. PLEASE do not let this be your legacy.

9. Incidentally, Moose, your concerns are duly noted, expressed as they are in an otherwise upbeat thread
We all hope that everything can get done asap and that the Prez becomes more engaged with Congress -- since he can't just make up laws on his own, and it all has to move through the Legislature, i.e. the law-making body.

In the meantime, he has accomplished a great deal.

6. Obama screwed up my sales pitch!
We USED to be able to offer to our customers (where I work) "one year same as cash! No payments for a year!" than Mr. smarty pants passed his stupid "protest the poor-downtrodden credit card customers" bill and now they are required to pay a minimum of "1% per month." That just doesn't roll of the tongue as lovely as "you dont owe anything for a year!"

SURE! He's forcing the public to be more responsible shoppers but it sure is hard to say!

Barack Obama ruined my life! ")

7. Rec'd. But you know what's a shame??
That this will not make the front page of this site. And even if it did, it would not have a THIRD of the recs as the doom, gloom, despair, "he hasn't done anything but talk purrty!" crap that's found and posted on this site regularly.

11. pretty misleading...
multiple sources = multiple administration and DLC sources

"restored science to its rightful place" is laughably misleading

"largest green investment" is FAR FAR FAR FAR short of his promised revolutionary green economy and making the US the world leader in the new green economy

Prohibited lobbyists from serving... except when he didn't--numerous exceptions, plus he has done less than nothing to slow the influence of lobbyists in our government, which was his real campaign issue.

Enhanced transparency... except for those secret meetings with Pharma and insurance execs that we didn't know about until six months (and irreperable damage) later

Successfully managed the H1N1 flu outbreak--*really!?* I mean *really!?* Other than the fact that there was no vaccine, except for the stuff that caused neurological damage, jsut what "managing" did he do?

I could go on, but this is time consuming--easy, but time consuming.

Yes. GOP "accomplishments" (other than their parochial partisan success at stopping nearly everything) are zero. Even mentioning them in the list is an example of "false choice" fallacy.

What about the vaccine with neurological effects?

21. your subject is a lie.
I never claimed any such thing.

The State of Texas, because of the number of textbooks they print, drives much of the national textbook production. They have instituted changes to add creationism to their science textbooks in elementary and middle schools, perhaps in high schools as well. This means many smaller states will also have new textbooks that incorporate creationist content.

What about the utter unavailablity of vaccine, regardless of side effects, throughout the worst of the "pandemic." To claim that Obama stopped the H1N1 epidemic is ludicrous.
