South Carolina state Rep. Tim Scott announced Monday he’s abandoning his campaign for lieutenant governor to run for Congress, raising the prospect that he could become the first African-American Republican in the House since 2003.
Scott announced on his website that he will run for the seat of retiring GOP Rep. Henry Brown, joining a crowded primary field that also includes the sons of two deceased Palmetto State political icons: Sen. Strom Thurmond and Gov. Carroll Campbell.
In his announcement, Scott took aim at what he called excessive federal spending in Washington. “We cannot afford them to continue to spend this way. And since January, this new administration has broken records for spending. This cannot go on,” Scott said.
If he wins the Republican primary, Scott would be well-positioned to become the first African-American Republican in Congress since Oklahoma Rep. J.C. Watts retired. Scott has been a Republican trailblazer in South Carolina and became the first African-American Republican to serve in the state Legislature when he was elected in 1995.
