Obama invites GOP leaders to health care talk

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama says he has invited Republican and Democratic leaders to discuss health care legislation later this month.

In an interview Sunday with CBS' Katie Couric, Obama said he wants Republicans "to put their ideas on the table."

Obama and Congress' Democratic leaders are seeking a way to overhaul the nation's health care system even though Senate Republicans are again able to block legislation with filibusters.

Polls show that many Americans feel Obama and his congressional allies have not sought enough GOP input, although Democrats say Republicans have shown virtually no interest in seeking a realistic agreement.

The White House says the Feb. 25 session will involve Republican and Democratic leaders from both houses of Congress, and will probably be held at Blair House, across the street from the White House.

10. HE KNOWS THAT
He has to get the American people to see it to.

Most people polled think the Dems a forcing a bad bill through because they are ignoring the Rethungs ideas

It is time to prove them wrong

2. Wasn't he saying just recently that to "pursue the
same policies and expect different results" just won't do it. Why then is he pursuing the same policy of trying to get Republicans to go along with the health care bills? He doesn't follow his own advice apparently.
Give it up Obama, they are never never going to help you do something.

3. This same bullshit is the reason we have no health care bill because all last year
was spent on the White House trying to get Collins and Snow to compromise.

4. This does highlight
the fact that the Republicans are the ones who are being obstructionists.

At some point, and I hope it comes soon, the Democrats will have to shrug their shoulders and just do it without the Republicans. I wish they had done it months ago instead of all this wasting time hoping for something that is not going to happen.

I wish I were more optimistic that the Dems will grow a pair and force the republicans to filibusters, but I won't hold my breath.

5. I will support this if...
it is televised from start to finish so all of the sane people that want health reform in America can see what this President has had to deal with on the topic of healthcare from both sides of the aisle

6. "start from scratch"
and of course if they do that, that means more hearings, more CBO analyses, amendments, debates, cloture votes, more debates, press conferences, more hearings, more amendments, more press conferences and posturing on TV.

By then it will be October.

And what will McConnell and Boner and the other Blue Dog pussies say next?

"Gosh, why don't we just wait until after the election to finish this up?"

8. Dude, they won't show up
It's not like Obama really believe that he'll get any bipartisanship here. It's all about doing it on TV.

9. Seems to be the strategy.
1. Offer a bipartisan hand to the Rethugs.
2. Watch as the Rethugs spit in it.
3. Make the Rethugs look like assholes in front of the entire country for refusing to compromise.
4. Profit!!!

I just hope Obama remembers steps 3 & 4...

11. So, the Republicans are not going to try to be "bipartisan" unless the Democrats scrap everything
and start over from scratch? Oh, I forgot, the Republicans demand "pre-conditions" for everything. :eyes: If the Republicans (say) they agree with a lot of things in the HCR legislation, then why does the entire thing need to be scrapped? Oh well, if they don't show up, Obama and the Democrats should just forget about the Republicans and get something passed any which way they can and move on and blast the Republicans for THEIR lack of bipartisanship. In fact, I wish he or somebody else would call out the Republicans and explain what "bipartisanship" is SUPPOSED to be like and what the Republicans apparently think it is. Calling for "bipartisanship" is great but the Republicans shouldn't be allowed to get away with demanding "bipartisanship" on their terms only. :banghead:
