I don't know for sure, but my source is excellent. Marshall is NC's current SOS. Rightwing Senator Richard Burr is up for re-election this year, and I think Marshall has a really good shot at his seat.

1. do you have any info on the positions of the democratic candidates?
I haven't found much. I am particularly interested in gay rights and education.

2. The candidates that I know about are Cal Cunningham, Ken Lewis, and Elaine Marshall
Here are their websites, if you want to try to sort out particular issues:

http://www.calfornc.com/
http://www.kennethlewisforsenate.com/
http://www.elainemarshall.org/

Any of them would be a significant improvement over Burr, as Pam's House Blend can tell you:

NC U.S. Senator Richard Burr has got to go - here are 8 reasons why
http://www.pamshouseblend.com/diary/13664/nc-us-senator-richard-burr-has-got-to-go-here-are-8-reasons-why

All three were willing to go on record regarding equality:

On the Record…2010 NC Democratic Senate Candidates

I'll support whoever comes out of the Democratic primary. But Lewis has no political history, and Cunningham served one term in the state Senate then didn't run for re-election, whereas Marshall served a term in the state Senate and is now in her third term as NC SOS.
