McConnell: Obama lost support because he governed ‘hard left’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says that President Barack Obama would have had more support in the Senate if he just governed more towards the middle. "As I've said all year, if he wants to meet us in the middle of the political spectrum we'll be there to help," McConnell told NBC's David Gregory Sunday.

For McConnell, the president's whole problem is that he isn't moderate enough. "The president decided to go hard left," he said. "That's why he doesn't have many of my members. If he chooses to govern in the middle he will have broader support," said McConnell.

8. Laughable
There is no center anymore. Even when Obama moves there, he picks up nothing from the R's.

Of course, it would be good if the President started making that point to people instead of publicly holding out hope for bipartisanship.

17. He hasn't yet, but he might as well now. It's just like that episode of "The West Wing"
when Bartlet was running for re-election and about to debate the thinly-disguised W clone. Polling had shown that no matter what he did, he was going to be perceived as "arrogant" and "intellectual", so he went out there and mopped up the floor with his idiot opponent. If the latest talking point is going to be "lefty", Obama might as well go left.

hoping it will stick and that most of the country will believe it. They want more tax cuts. Any issue that comes up they scream tax cuts!tax cuts! which they put in every bill and they haven't don't a damn thing but help the rich or those who are very comfortable already.

When the jobs bill comes up watch their proposals they all will have to do with tax cuts and some way to take away from the elderly and poor..

Our Moral Values
by GEORGE LAKOFF

This article appeared in the December 6, 2004 edition of The Nation.

We are the 55 million progressives who came together in this election, voted for Kerry and rejected the Bush agenda.

We came together because of our moral values: care and responsibility, fairness and equality, freedom and courage, fulfillment in life, opportunity and community, cooperation and trust, honesty and openness. We united behind political principles: equality, equity (if you work for a living, you should earn a living) and government for the people--all the people.

These are traditional American values and principles, what we are proudest of in this country. The Democrats' failure was a failure to put forth our moral vision, celebrate our values and principles, and shout them out loud...

44. Polling shows that a lot of people, largely gutless "Independents"...
...actually DO believe that he is too far to the left. Because the vast majority of "Independents" are actually thinly veiled Republicans who occasionally find the sense to realise that the party are actually a big bunch of lunatics. This, unfortunately, does not stop them returning to the fold after giving Democrats a few months at the helm (as long as they are "moderate"!)

Now, the sad thing is that policy which actually *is* left wing would in many cases be very popular. However, these people will never, ever see that because they have the Republicans AND the media hammering home the notion that Obama and the Democrats are already governing as though they're steering the good ship USSR circa 1950. Yeah, there's doubtless plenty of Dems who really are GOP with joke-shop glasses and moustache, but I believe there are many who would veer left if the television media existed as a relatively impartial entity it does in most democracies.

It's hard to say what Obama should do...My instinct has shifted somewhat in the past few days and I'm torn between creeping left, out of the field of vision of the politically myopic "Independents" or just taking a hard turn and playing the Repubs at their own game - "Tut tut, here we are with a centrist agenda and the Republicans - who, you might remember gave us BUSH and CHENEY and ECONOMIC COLLAPSE (emphasise their weaknesses!) - are still trying to deny us the opportunity to put things right". Effectively dare them to filibuster and then override their message of "fiscal responsibility" by portraying them as greedy fat cats who lapped up unprecedented spending under Bush.
