Give it up, brother tells FARC leader
<snip>

THE brother of the leader of Colombia's notorious FARC guerrillas called on his sibling today to yield to the international clamour demanding the liberation of 700 hostages the rebels hold.

Roberto Saenz said his brother, Guillermo Len "Alfonso Cano" Saenz, had to obey the plea made on Sunday during marches in Colombia and in cities around the world for the hostages to be freed.

More than four million people were estimated to have taken part in the rallies, including, in Paris, Franco-Colombian former hostage Ingrid Betancourt.

"I call on Alfonso and all the members of the (FARC) secretariat ... to enter into a process of dialogue urgently needed and that we make an effort so that these hostages can be with their families today," Roberto Saenz said on Colombia's commercial Caracol television network.

1. At Least Hundreds of Thousands Protesting In Colombia, And FARC's Stalinoids
At least hundreds of thousands of protestors out in Colombia's streets protesting FARC's holding hostages, and FARC's Stalinist leadership doesn't get it--holding hostages is not only highly unpopular within Colombia, but also doesn't help them attract new sympathizers and members. No wonder they're losing.

2. Well...
DU's own resident pro-FARC cell remains committed to the cause, too

Time after time they've been asked to acknowledge and condemn FARC atrocities, and they've avoided responding to the challenge.

3. They'd Probably Think It Was Distracting
DU's own "sandalistas" would probably think that discussing atrocities committed BY FARC's would be distracting. The rest of us, despite having little love for Colombia's government or the right-wing thugs who run or contract out the death squads, realize that regardless of the old canting about "the means justifying the ends," the means shape, form, AND INFORM the ends. To me, FARC's atrocities are at least a fair indicator as to how FARC would govern if they gained control of Colombia; that's why I don't support them.
