Mexico gives scholarships to dead miners' children

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The governor of a Mexican state has given scholarships to the children of the 14 miners who were killed last week in a gas explosion at a coal mine.

Coahuila Gov. Jorge Torres said Monday that the state will pay for the educational needs up to high school of 38 sons and daughters.

They were killed by a blast May 3 that his the mine in the town of San Juan de Sabinas, which is 85 miles (135 kilometers) southwest of Eagle Pass, Texas.

The explosion was so powerful it tore off the arm of a 15-year-old boy who was working on the surface near the mine entrance.
