Ecuador Awards Cuba for Social Aid
The prefect of Pichincha, Gustavo Baroja, delivered the award to Cuban ambassador in Ecuador, Benigno Perez in an event commemorating 186 years of the Battle of Pichincha that marked the end of Spanish domination.

"We are about to declare Pichincha a province free of illiteracy with the help of the Latin American and Caribbean Polytechnic Institute and the Republic of Cuba," he told hundreds of guests to the event that was held in the Chapel of Man.

The prefect explained that the solidarity of the brotherly Cuban people also extends to the field of health with Operation Miracle that restored sight to 1,950 Ecuadorians in this province.

He also informed that Venezuela joined this campaign and today, more than 600 citizens of Pichincha were also operated for eye problems.

It is a form "of recovering the dignity of this people and a form of individual and family sovereignty," Baroja explained, expressing his thanks to Cuba.

This event was testimony toáthe martyrs of the Battle of Pichincha under the command of Marshal Antonio Jose de Sucre, and included the presence of Latin American diplomats and Cuban advisors of the literacy program "Yes, I can."
