Visiting U.S. Assistant Secretary of State David Johnson said Thursday his country would continue supporting Honduras' efforts against drug trafficking.
"What we can do in general terms, is to work together with this country and other countries in the region, to face all the problems brought out by drug trafficking," Johnson said after meeting with Honduran President Porfirio Lobo.
Johnson said the Honduran government had a big challenge ahead on this issue, adding that he was working with the country to build a better and stronger police force and a judicial system that would be tougher on drug trafficking activities.
Johnson began an official visit to Honduras on Wednesday. He visited the country's main prison where security was being strengthened. He also met with heads of Honduran police and judicial authorities.
