Soldiers 'trafficked weapons to FARC'
Soldiers 'trafficked weapons to FARC'
Monday, 20 September 2010 15:50 Christina Filipovic

A network trafficking weapons and explosives was broken up when 32 suspected arms dealers were captured in a seven-city, joint operation between the Colombian national army and the Prosecutor General's Office.

The traffickers reportedly bought weapons outside of the country and sold them on to illegal armed groups, including the FARC, in Colombia.

The Prosecutor General's Office stated that former members of the DAS and police, as well as five former and active members of the military, are among those captured.

1. 44 were arrested, judge frees 26 because ...

... the arresting authorities disturbed their beauty sleep.

Colombian law stipulates that searches and arrests can only be made between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. So a two-year investigation went down the drain with the judge's ruling that the arms traffickers had lost a few hours of sleep.

The 26 men that the judge freed were arrested between 3;30 a.m. and 6 a.m. They included seven active military officers, 12 retired military (including a colonel) and one WITCH.

The arms-trafficking network consulted with the WITCH before making any deliveries to the guerrillas, El Tiempo reported. (No other details given on the WITCH.)

The weapons were stolen from Colombian army bases (not purchased abroad as Colombia Reports says in its story).

------------

Just another normal day in Colombia -- an arms trafficking WITCH
