A US federal court has sentenced a former commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) to 27 years in prison for conspiring to smuggle tons of cocaine into the United States, prosecutors said on Thursday.

Gerardo Aguilar Ramirez, alias Cesar, was extradited to the United States from Colombia in July 2009 to face drug trafficking charges. He was also accused of being responsible for holding three American defense contractors and several political prisoners hostage for years in FARC camps
