El Presidente for Life opens Simon Bolivars' tomb.
CARACAS, Venezuela — Hugo Chavez has opened the coffin of his idol Simon Bolivar as Venezuela investigates the president's suspicions of foul play in the South American independence hero's death nearly two centuries ago.

4. Chavez isn't president for life--yet--but Bolivar was
Bolivar died at 47, supposedly from tuberculosis. While such early deaths from that disease weren't unheard of, his seems to have been especially quick. If a forensic investigation turns up anything like metals poisoning, it could provide another nail in the political coffin of the right wing colonial land barons.

6. Really. Will it fix inflation and rotting food in government warehouses?
that is what this is designed to distract people from.

7. Of course it is
I also wonder whether or not they've fixed the bureaucratic bottleneck that kept peasants with newly apportioned land from getting loans for seed to plant that land.

I would love to see that country fixed but it's going to take time. You did know that, didn't you?

12. The cool thing about a central nationalized government
like the one he is building is that when it all goes to shit people know who to blame. Now in N. Korea they don't do that blame thing because the government kills you. In china, they jail you. Looking forward to see what che jesus does.

8. It's also a novel approach and opportunity to blast Colombia
and to further justify breaking off relations over Colombia's assertion that FARC is finding safe haven in Venezuela.

5. The remains of US prez Zachary Taylor were exhumed in 1991
in order to look for traces of arsenic indicating that he was murdered. You got a point, other than your false, racist 'el presidente for life' statement? Oh, and BTW, the personal pronoun is spelled 'OUR' - not 'ARE'! I've tried to rein in my anal-retentive tendencies where butchering of the English language is concerned, but there are some manglings I just cannot ignore! Another thing: it's 'CUCKOO,' goddamit!

I'd really like to know. There are lots of posters here in the LA forum who use spanish language descriptions of leaders.

10. Self-fulfilling prophecy
Of COURSE he was poisoned. Dictators with control of the state media don't exhume their heroes and NOT find what they're looking for. The only question is this: where did George W. Bush keep the time machine he used to poison Bolivar?

14. Actual headline is: Venezuela opens Bolivar's tomb to examine remains
and using the "President for Life" meme, which I am certain you never applied to Colombia's Uribe when he tried to get around the constitution, says a lot about your politics.

24. And his party declined to take this decision out of the hands of the people through referendum,
and instead have the congress decide it, then bribed some senators to pass it.

At least one of those congress people went to prison for it when she made a public confession. Her name is Yidis Medina.

Pathetic, wasn't it?

Oh, and when they tried to push it through the next time, their Supreme Court made a decision this wouldn't be acceptible, pushing for a third, when it had been only one term several years ago, and Uribe's secret intelligence department, the D.A.S. wiretapped the Supreme Court Justices' phones, and started spying on them in order to apply some hard pressure.

Evil little gnome, Uribe.

...by some right wing loon to see if he is incorruptible. Then they'll build a shrine to him and sell t-shirts and coffee mugs with his corpse on it in a gift shop.
