Panama will receive increase of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers

In 2011, Panama could receive 50 additional volunteers from the Peace Corps of the United States (U.S.). This, according to a statement by U.S. Ambassador in Panama, Barbara Stephenson, who added that this same amount could be added in 2012.

Stephenson explained that this reflects the good work that U.S. volunteers have done thus far and are continuing to do in the country.

The Ambassador's statements came during a visit to the Chiriquí province, a region that currently hosts 16 U.S. volunteers.

These volunteers work in areas of economic development, tourism, teaching English, and environmental conservation, among others.

"We have noticed that the Peace Corps is growing in Panama...At present, there are about 160 volunteers nationwide," she said.
