‘Tweet-In’ Aims to Stop the Canada Colombia FTA

WASHINGTON - May 11 - The Council of Canadians is organizing what may be the first ‘Tweet-In' of its kind on Parliament Hill. On Tuesday, May 11, the Harper Conservatives will move to shut down debate by the federal trade committee on the Canada-Colombia FTA. The Tweet-In aims to prevent the rushing through of a harmful free trade agreement with Colombia without properly assessing its potential impacts on human rights, workers and the environment.

Participants in the Tweet-In will be sending regular updates to Twitter and including MP names and contacts so people across Canada can write to the Liberals and Conservatives in real time expressing their concerns with the FTA and the attempt to shut down debate.

"Incredibly, the Liberals may support the motion unless we make it clear that Canadians are watching," says Council of Canadians Trade Campaigner Stuart Trew. "By tweeting their words and actions in real time we can reach tens of thousands of Canadians who can't be at the trade committee meeting in person."
