Ecuador may export electricity to Colombia, Venezuela
Ecuador may export electricity to Colombia, Venezuela
Irish Sun
Friday 19th February, 2010
(IANS)

Quito, Feb 19 (IANS/EFE) The Ecuadorian government has said it has overcome an electricity crisis and may even be in a position to export power to Colombia and Venezuela.

'We can say we've overcome the power crisis in the country,' Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Miguel Calahorrano said in statements posted on the website of the presidential press office.

The minister added that Ecuador currently has sufficient capacity to consider exporting power to Colombia, which he said may be interested because it is facing a problem of low water levels at its hydroelectric plants.

He said that the issue was discussed with Ecuadorian head of state Rafael Correa during the most recent gathering of Union of South American Nations, or Unasur, presidents in Quito.

'At the Unasur summit last week, the Colombian president, Alvaro Uribe, asked President Correa if we had the capacity sell them electricity, if necessary,' the Ecuadorian minister said.

1. Hugo Chavez is really causing a lot of trouble for everyone.
He should call off his thugs and let it rain. ;)

2. It's too late
I think it's too late to make lousy jokes about the problem. The electricity crisis in Venezuela can be attributed to government mismanagement.

4. Chavez didn't expel rain
Chavez surrounds himself with incompetents. They failed to beef up the electricity generation system to take account of population growth, the droughts (which are a cyclic event), and they also failed to maintain the existing system. In other words, they are lousy administrators of the national assets, and spend too much time playing drums, chanting marxist slogans, and dressing up in red to listen to Chavez speak endlessly, rather than focusing on their work.

6. Where are you anyway?
I am in Venezuela. Are you in the US? So tell us, expert, how do you get to understand how truly awful the government here is? Do you get to smell the garbage, dodge potholes, fear the criminals, walk in the dark, visit a public hospital, or see prices go through the roof?

7. What you describe is probably misses few countries.
In the US you could be describing some portion of every major city. A major interstate highway bridge collapsed killing adozen people. The government knew the bridge was in trouble. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-35W_Mississippi_River_bridge#Maintenance_and_inspection

In rural areas, people have been beaten or killed because of their color or sexual orientation.

In the case of VZ, it may be like a lot of places that have that have additional trouble when the economy is down. And maybe some rural areas got more attention recently making up for years of differed maintenance.
