I'd been up to that point, simply assuming what I read in the corporate media and heard from others was the truth. It just took one event, the grotesque spectacle in Miami of the little boy, Elian Gonzalez, ichand all that rage boiling up which cried out for further inquiry.
I learned the kid's drunken granduncle, Lazaro, had been back and forth to Cuba, and had met the smaller Elian Gonzalez living with his dad then. Elian Gonzalez' father, Miguel, slept in his own car so Lazaro could sleep in his bed during his stay, and Lazaro spent his days fishing, and his night hanging out in the local hotel bars. What an odd visitor!
Once I learned these same people who stood on camera, with their faces red with rage, snarling at the reporters, like Ninoska Perez Castellon (I was horrified about her nastiness, snottiness, enough to find out who she is, she was the spokeswoman for the Cuban American National Foundation which was a sponsor for Luis Posada Carilles, and others) and remember that super creepy mayor of Miami "Crazy Joe" Carrollo?
Like Spanish Nazis. (Ninoska goes wild if people attempt to compare her Cuban community to a "minority." She informs them they are in no way a minority here. (I think it's racist, as the establishment Cuban Spanish were/are extremely nut job racist, just like USA Southerners.)
The door opened out immediately to a WORLD of information we've NOT been respected enough to be told in the US. I'm going to have to overcome years and years of total ignorance, and my own stupidity for assuming I had a good idea of what had been happening regarding US policy.
What you have shared here has broken through barriers of my ignorance for me, and given depth, and meaning to things I'm just starting to learn about. I used to read your comments if I saw them long before this L.A. forum was established, read with great interest about the line of relationship in your background leading to people totally a part of history in their country, who were there during deep conflict when such major steps were taken. Admire your grandmother's ability to keep her identity, her beliefs, her conscience, and her courage, and her creativity and energy in doing something about giving voice to the truth.
There's so much going on, and huge chances may be on the way, really good, or just goddawful. I'm so glad we have this meeting place to pool resources, discuss, and experience these things together.
Thank you for taking the time and having the idea for this thread. Very warming, appreciate it so much. :grouphug:
