Lugo Still Paraguay's Favorite Son
Lugo Still Paraguay's Favorite Son

Asuncion, Feb 26 (Prensa Latina) Fernando Lugo, presidential candidate for Paraguay's opposition APC -Patriotic Alliance for Change- is still leading voting intentions, polls revealed Tuesday.

A Gabinete de Estudios de Opinion's survey showed Lugo favored by 40 percent of voters, leaving governing Colorado Party candidate Blanca Ovelar in a distant second place with 26.6 percent, followed by former Paraguayan Army chief Lino Oviedo, with 22.4 percent.

A parallel survey by the Paraguayan Communication and Art Institute agreed that Lugo is in first place, but gave him less of an edge over his contenders: 31.1 percent, with Blanca Ovelar with 25.5 and Oviedo with 23.9 percent.

Supported by Paraguay´s main popular organizations and historic opposition parties, Lugo proposes a national unity government if he is elected president.

In a campaign act recently held at Alto Parana, eastern Paraguay, Lugo promised he would govern the country in accordance with the different groups now supporting him.

He also reiterated he would foster an integral agrarian reform in his country, and declare war on corruption.
