"Cuba reelected member of
Human Rights Council

UNITED NATIONS, May 12.—Cuba was today reelected for a second three-year term as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC), in a secret vote at the General Assembly.

For Latin America and the Caribbean, those elected were Cuba, Mexico and Uruguay, all of them second-time candidates for a seat on this important UN agency based in Geneva.

According to the Assembly resolution that created the HRC in 2006, it is made up of 47 states chosen directly and individually by secret ballot by a majority of the Assembly’s members.

Thirteen of them are from Africa, 13 from Asia, six from Eastern Europe, eight from Latin America and the Caribbean and seven from Western Europe, and others, with mandates that expire alternately in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Along with Cuba, Mexico and Uruguay, others elected on Tuesday included five countries for Africa, five for Asia, two for Eastern Europe and three for Western Europe and other states.

Other states reelected were Cameroon, Djibouti, Mauritius, Nigeria, China, Bangladesh, Russia and Jordan, among others.

The session, led by Namibia’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Kaire M. Mbuende, elected Belgium, Norway, the United States, Hungary and Kyrgyzstan as new members to that human rights agency. (PL)
