Heading out to get my emergency supplies
as we might be hit with Hanna winds later on. Same list I had for Y2K, which I got at 11:30 pm: Toilet paper, cigarettes, baby food for Nero. I was a Girl Scout so I know how to prepare.

3. Yeah, it's the tornados they're emphasizing -- I'm paying attention.

5. Passed on the eggs in case we lose power (which probably won't happen) so
got cookies instead! Does that count for protein? :7

4. I DID get a book -- would be adrift without my laptop OR a TV --
It's not going to be bad where we are they don't think. Just some gusts of wind. A rain band just passed over - heavy rain. Made me feel like I was home in Seattle, snickering at those who open their umbrellas from the car to the store. (Seattle rain snob.)

:hi:

they THINK Ike is going to head more south, asn of 5:00pm, but it's still too soon to tell....it did weaken a bit, but is suppose to get back up to a 4 Sunday.

I hope this stays to the south....

Oh, but Hannah was a rain event here, and some gust, but that's all...I don't think it will be that bad.

10. Just watched the 8pm update. Expected to make landfall after midnight,
SC/NC boarder. It's a little more out east than they previously thought, so that's good.

But yeah, once it does land it is going to move really quickly north, so by the afternoon it should be pretty much gone.

Did you feel any wind/rain from any of the bands where you are?

13. For the future of our group, gateley, when you leave, head west, don't turn around and

don't stop until you reach Seattle!

Over 20 years ago, as a USFS firefighter, I learned the wisdom of having a "fire pack" loaded and ready to go at all times. Today, it never leaves my Jeep and goes wherever I go, at all times. Two hundred dollars cash, three space blankets, glow sticks, flashlight, three gallons water, water purification tablets, three days' change of clothing, boots, lighters & fire starter, three days' supply of MREs, compass and Forest Service fire maps for all the FS Districts all the way to the family redoubt at Brookings on the coast, three person tent, sleeping bag, various knives, three 100 foot hanks of climbing rope, hatchet, fishing tackle.....you get the idea. It's a large, internal frame pack, loaded inside and out. My grand kids call it "Grampa's Go-kit". I've made similar packs for my two daughters and their families, and for my daughters' mother. Since the grand kids live at the redoubt on the coast with their mother, their packs include life jackets for the kids in the probable event of tsunami. A pack goes with each vehicle that travels away from the redoubt, even just the 10 miles to town. The redoubt also has a pantry with a year's supply of drinking water, and dried & canned staples (beans, rice, barley, masa, peanut butter, canned salmon, etc) sufficient to supply 8 persons' requirements until harvest time. All this for the eventual natural disaster, such as the expected subduction zone earthquake everyone here on the west coast knows is only a matter of time. When the shit hits the fan, I don't expect to have time to supply up, nor do I expect store shelves to have anything to offer within a matter of an hour of the event.

Get your ass out of there and don't even think about looking back. Please.

16. I am printing this list!
VI, during Katrina, there were several threads on DU about emergency supplies & what you should always have on hand. The problem was, the compiled lists were so extensive that I had no idea where to start or how to whittle it down to something manageable. Thanks for this.

I have never heard the word 'redoubt' before & had to look it up.
