5. Many years ago we had a sweet dog (Angel)
who had had puppies. After all her puppies were weaned and found a home, we got a kitten. The dog treated her with the same consideration as her puppies, letting her eat food first, grooming her, and even nursing her. One day I walked into the living room and the kitten was curled up on top of Angel. It was so sweet.

6. I had the most wonderful cat for about 17 years.
She was a talker and preferred to have the last word. She also used to allow my parakeet and cockatiel to sit on her head. I have some old photos somewhere around of her with a bird on her head. I should look them up.

Animals are so special. I can't imagine not having them a part of my life. Right now I have 3 bouviers, a cat, three birds, a bunch of mice, 2 turtles, and 2 snakes. It's a regular ark around here, with seldom a dull moment. I wouldn't have it any other way.

12. They are really incredible creatures.
The two I have are both corn snakes, so they are non-venomous. I love the way they move. It just seems unreal the way they can climb, burrow, and get across the room without legs. Their bodies are very smooth. You can only feel their scales if you rub from tail toward their head. They sleep with their eyes open, but you can tell when they're asleep because they don't respond very quickly to movement. Both are about 4 ft long, which for a corn is full-grown. They are very gentle, don't bite, and are easy to handle. I used to take Maizie to my classroom every so often. The kids loved her. Corns shed their skin about once a month or so. It is fascinating. The skin comes off usually in one big piece starting at the head. The snake slithers out of it like when you peel off your socks.

I originally only had one, Maizie. She escaped from her habitat in April. I looked everywhere for her, turned the house upside down, but I couldn't find her. I gave up after about 3 weeks, and purchased another, Cobb. Two weeks ago, Maizie turned up again. She was just sitting on the kitchen floor right by the doorway to the living room. I couldn't believe it. I don't know where she had been, but she appeared healthy and plump, so she'd found something to eat and drink. It is possible she had been getting water from the bird's water dishes I suppose. I don't know.

Anyway, now Cobb has a girlfriend, Maizie is safe, and I now have two.

I really appreciate all living creatures, although I have a hard time with spiders and scorpions. I like observing and learning about their life cycles, habits, etc.

I know many people who are afraid of snakes. When Maizie was on the lam, a couple of my friends refused to even come in the house.

13. I have a way-overblown fear of snakes but I think it comes from
growing up in the south where there were copperheads in our backyard in the summer. Camouflage, no sound warning... and water mocassins / cottonmouths / whatever they were in the creek by the neighbor's house. And rattlesnakes out there somewhere.

My mom is terrified of snakes - she had a close call with a rattlesnake when she was a kid and has the scars from a barbed wire fence from jumping away from it.

Snakes were my #1 nightmare as a child. Last summer there were several snakes hanging out right by my apartment door and while I know they were harmless ones, the thought of them getting in the house was more than I could bear, and I started having nightmares again. Didn't help when my landlord told me about finding snakeskins in the attic!

14. That makes sense. If I had those type of experiences, I might feel very differently about them, too.
I have a healthy respect for venomous snakes, and wouldn't be very comfortable if I thought they could be hangin' outside my back door. I don't understand why people want to keep them as pets.

I've always liked snakes, but my only contacts as a child were with the harmless types. My dad used to rustle up a garter snake once in a while to show me, so my experiences were positive.

I know mine are full grown and harmless, so I will be able to care for them during their entire life spans. I often thought about getting a boa or python, but they get too big, and when they are full grown, can be dangerous just due to their size and strength.

9. It's not up there anymore :(
Now they have some video of two little Schnauzers being tortured by their owner....
the owner is making those poor dogs do one trick after another after another just to get a chewy stick.

Tobi doesn't know how good she's got it.
