Political Weirdness: Jack Ruby pinback button
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 12:47 PM by democraticinsurgent
Here's a weird find. This is not a new find but one I've never dug into much so this seems like a good place to toss out for discussion.

A few years back I was perusing the paper goods at an Indiana antique mall and came across a dog eared copy of the 1964 Democratic National Convention with a pin-back button pinned to it. The button is white with red letters and simply says "Ruby".

This is a good one for JFK conspiracy theory. Did someone make Ruby pin-back buttons for distribution at the 1964 convention, as it appears? A celebratory thing, it seems, and all the googling in the world hasn't done me any good. My guess is that they were distributed quietly and not for public consumption.

With LBJ's pic on the front, the convention in Atlantic City (home of the Mafia) and "compliments of Pat" written on the front, it's fun to speculate as to the back story. There are many who think that LBJ was central to the plot to kill JFK, and had help from the same Mafia that Jack Ruby worked for.

Who was Pat? Could have been Edmund "Pat" Brown, then-Gov of California and Jerry Brown's dad. Or some mafioso?

History buffs, this one's for you.

1. Not to rain on the parade, but maybe Ruby is the name of a delegate.
Worth further investigation. I wonder if there's a roster of delegates somewhere to rule out Ruby.

3. I got one for ya ...... a Spiro candle
Spiro Agnew candle.

About 9 inches long, 3 inches high and 2 inches deep. Layered red, white, and blue, front to back. It spells out Spiro.

Imagine the letters S-P-I-R-O cut out on a bandsaw so they form a single piece.

The candle is faded, with the blue faded the most but still obviously blue. It is in its original shrink wrap and, apart from the fading, in perfect condition.

It sits atop a bookshelf in my office between a framed hand drawn Snoopy identical to my avatar and a paperweight that reads "Nobody Likes a Smart Ass".

5. since we're on political memorabilia...
...I got a "Bomb Hanoi" button in a box of mixed jewelry. It's odd, because the former owner (who is a neighbor) is a liberal.
