1. I have a Hoover Fusion cyclone Vac and it does a great job.
It is the cheap version of the Dyson upright which I could never afford. Kohl's has it on sale frequently. Last week they had it for $89.95. It has no bag, you have to empty the cylinder fairly often so the holes will not plug but that is quick and easy. It seems to pick up stuff that I cannot even see and is good for pet fur. I don't know how light a machine you need but this one is pretty easy to lug around and an easy handle to carry it upstairs.

Comes with assorted attachments.

2. i have a dirt devil from the evil WallyWorld. we paid around $50 for it
it's adequate for pickups inbetween getting out the Rainbow


and we have 3 dogs and a cat and live in the dusty desert and hubby has allergies

dirt devil is a good brand IME
