Construction exec's home target of abortion protests
LAKEWOOD - Anti-abortion activists marched up and down the neighborhood's tidy streets Sunday, holding graphic placards of dismembered fetuses and signs comparing abortion to the Holocaust.

But the demonstration wasn't held at a clinic or the home of an abortion provider.

As they have several times, a group of abortion foes marched in front of the home of Gary Meggison, senior vice president of the The Weitz Company Rocky Mountain Business Office.

The reason: The company has been hired by Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains to renovate and expand a building at East 38th Avenue and Pontiac Street in the Stapleton neighborhood. The 52,000-square-foot, $6.4 million facility will house administrative offices and a health clinic when it opens in about a year.

Lakewood is now thinking of passing a city ordinance outlawing neighborhood protests, based on this whacko group's antics.

1. This is so out of line

and completely inappropriate. :grr::mad: Why are these people not at least fined? This crap should go on their records. It's terrorism, plain and simple.

I hope that Lakewood works to pass this ordinance. They have got to be held accountable. It's ridiculous to me that they think their bullying should have no bounds. I rue the day these terrorists gained the right to harass women in front of clinics. I had a feeling they wouldn't stop there.

edited for typo.

2. I am so sick of the attacks on Planned Parenthood
It's almost like an orchestrated push to provide misinformation to those who DO have insurance, DON'T need to go to "free" clinics, or sliding scale clinics for health care, and have a tendency toward forced birth emotionalism.

Planned Parenthood most likely, (although I don't have statistics to back it up) has prevented more abortions by provided birth control and health education than all the clinic bombings, fire settings, aborted fetus pictures and ridiculous protests will ever do.

What part of that do these people not understand? It only takes a day at PP to see what the organization provides, everything from treatment of STD's to birth control. They can catch cancer before it spreads, they provide health care referrals to people who don't know where to go. They give information in a straight forward, non-judgmental way. They serve the under-served, they are a safety net for so very many.

4. Forced birth emotionalism is correct...
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 07:48 PM by bliss_eternal
...they don't seem to be at all interested in the facts. I've talked with lots of people that didn't know that pp offered anything other than abortions. They bought into the whole "abortion is murder" talking points from the right wingers and religious folks and have focused in on that alone.

With people like this, there's a lot of "magical thinking."

Premarital sex in their minds is a sin. But if they indulge in sin and get pregnant they won't consider committing another "sin" to abort. Sorry, I just don't understand that kind of thinking--sin is sin, no?

I guess I'm naive, but why should children be some sort of living testament to their parent's religious principles? Or punishment for their "moment of sin"? Sorry, but I've known too many children born to such parents and they've spent their lives hearing how they were a mistake or an accident. :grr::mad: Or worse told, "never have kids--they ruin your life." :eyes: Yet--their parents are "pro-life."

Yeah, it's real pro-life to have a child and spend their lifetime negating that life. :eyes:

3. The attacks on anyone affiliated with PP
is proof that abortion is not their final target. They are absolutely trying to elimitate all birth control and sexual health-care. x(

5. UPDATE: They are going to picket on CHRISTMAS MORNING!
I saw an update to this story on the local news last night. They were reporting on how upset the neighbors of this man are, because of these protesters. I can't believe the police can't do anything about them -- I watched the clip, and they were standing IN THE STREET, blocking traffic. Every clinic counter-protest I've ever been to, the anti-choicers and us had to stay on a sidewalk, and keep moving, not stand around.

And the last item in the story, is that they will picket this guy's house on christmas morning. How Christian of them!

6. omg...
...:wow:

How is this legal? He is a private citizen, not a clinic (not that I agree or understand the clinic protests, but at least that isn't someone's residence).

If there is an update to the story, expressing anyone that can be contacted to help with this--please share. I would be willing to make some calls, etc. if it could help. This is inexcusable and disturbing. I shudder to think who else could be targeted and where. :scared:
