A List of Famous Attention Whores.
We all know about how horrible that over-reactionary, tantrum-having Cindy Sheehan woman is.

Here's a few others you may have never heard of.

Rosa Parks:

God, what a harpy. First, she sells out to the NAACP, then Apple computers. I heard she even made a gangsta rap song with that group Outkast. She even had the nerve to criticize Southern Dems. Go back to the back, you attention-starved nobody.

Mamie Till-Mobley:

Apparently, just because this woman's son died, it made her some kind of hero. Did she go around advocating swimming safety? No, she went galavanting around the country, attending celebrity trials. And that open casket funeral was way too extreme. She certainly didn't win anybody to our side with that stunt. Apparently she also made enemies with southern democrats. She's totally out-lived her usefulness.

This jerk:

Apparently, Quang Duc hated our troops so much he had to make a big spectacle out of it. Oh, look at me! I'm unamerican! If you can't stand the heat, get out of the fire, jackass.

This broad:

Oh, boo hoo. We've all got to make sacrifices, sister. Now support the war, or shut up.

These cry-babies:

Personally, I'm sick of this victim mentality.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. There's no shortage attention whores out there. Feel free to nominate a few.

18. Having lived through the Civil Rights era...
and Vietnam, and plenty more than that, I've no doubt that Cindy Sheehan will live on through history as being the same caliber as Rosa Parks, or Mamie Till-Mobley.

And their critics will also be remembered as an equivalent deck of jokers.

115. Thank you for the picture of Mamie Till-Mobley:
She and Rosa Parks share a fair amount of credit for the civil rights movement of nearly 50 years ago.

Here's her son, Emmett Till.

Here is the story of Emmett Till, and his mother.

In 1955, one hundred days before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus, Emmett Till was brutally murdered at age 14 in the Mississippi Delta. He was visiting his cousins in Mississippi that summer from his home in Chicago. One of his friends recalled, "Emmett was a funny guy all the time. He had a suitcase of jokes that he liked to tell." He crossed a line in the deeply segregated South, and made a pass at a white clerk, on a dare from his friends.

"I'm going to make an example of you -- just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand," one of his murderers later said. The agonizing brutality of his murder is recounted on Democracy Now, as told by his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley (see link below).

That year, two men were tried for the murder. They were acquitted by an all white, all male jury. The jury deliberated only 67 minutes -- one juror told a reporter that they wouldn't have taken so long if they hadn't stopped to drink pop. (The men later told Life Magazine the story, and confessed. Nevertheless, they were never tried again.)

Mamie Till-Mobley was a young, black, single working mother who lived in Chicago. The first time she saw her son's corpse, she was surrounded by her father and two others. She recalled, "I shrugged them. I said, 'Turn me loose. I’ve got a job to do, and I don't have time to be fainting now.'”

Emmett's mother literally refused to let Mississippi officials seal the lid on her son's coffin, obtaining a court order for the return of his body and demanding that the padlocked coffin that arrived be opened so people could witness first-hand the savagery wrought on her son.

Although the torture of seeing her beautiful son mutilated was nearly unbearable, she wanted everyone to see for themselves what he went through while being murdered. "Let the people see what I have seen.” she recounted later, “I want the world to see this, because there's no way I can tell this story and give them the visual picture of what my son looked like.”

Millions saw the photographs of Emmett's body taken at his funeral by Jet magazine photographer David Jackson. Newspapers around the world carried the story, and it became a focal point of shock and anger.

One hundred days after Emmett Till's murder, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a city bus to a white man, launching the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott and the civil rights movement.

Blacks had previously been arrested, and even killed, for disobeying bus drivers.

Years later, Parks recalled the events of that day, "When that white driver stepped back toward us, when he waved his hand and ordered us up and out of our seats, I felt a determination cover my body like a quilt on a winter night." She has written that she wasn't physically tired that day. "The only tired I was, was tired of giving in."

And, Rosa Parks was thinking about Emmett Till.

We owe a debt to Rosa Parks, and to Mamie Till-Mobley, for their true courage.

that they allow the right to define their views.

187. They aren't exactly alike but that wasn't claimed in the OP
just that they all could be called "attention whores" based on their choice to draw attention to their causes. There are no other claims made.

People think Cindy is being put on a pedestal because they assume we're saying she is perfect. No one is saying that. She's been through a lot and she's tired. She wants to quit now, and that's up to her. But to call her an "attention whore" is to not understand that gathering attention is exactly what she needed to do, and many other people have done extreme things to gather attention too. That doesn't mean she is a hero, or that she isn't for that matter, or that her level of "hero-worthyness" is the same as other people mentioned here. That isn't the point here. The only point is that a lot of people who have fought for causes could be called "attention whores".

I think that's comparable to what Rosa put up with. I've heard there is NOTHING worse than the loss of a child and to lose one to an immoral war is unthinkable. She is the voice of conscience. Too bad you don't have one.

She is one of my heroes...JUST like Rosa is. I bet Rosa would support her.

13. I just hate that Cindy had to go through it at all.
All she probably ever wanted to do was live a nice, anonymous life, take care of her family, watch everyone grow up and prosper, and grow old with her husband. Bush took all of that away. I took a few shots at her yesterday but apologized for it today in this thread.

I wish I could say something meaningful here but the entire ordeal just makes me miserable :(

ps - funny post, Rosa selling out to Apple. Thanks for the smile.

somebody called her an attention whore on the bus?

Would she have called for an end to the boycott because somebody criticized her?

Clearly, Sheehan has ALOT of good and she deserves our thanks.

But she doesnt rise to the level of martydom and/or greatness of the people you have compared her to. She had that potential, but she quit (as is her right)

153. I dunno, I view the monsters we are facing a little differently.
Just a few years ago the juggernaut that had wrested control of this country away from the people was rapidly consolidating its power. They really were getting to the tipping point, where runaway fascism was almost assured.

No one could speak out against what they were doing.

Somehow, she was the acorn they tripped over. She made herself into an unavoidable obstacle, directly in their path. She is a hero, and history will probably point to her as the most influential force in halting the blitzkrieg that these monsters were on the brink of accomplishing.

By arresting their progress, she has at the very least bought time, such that a discussion of the war could begin to take place.

No one else did that.

171. And here we go with the martyr theme again
I guess some on the left these days are so desperate to be important they equate being against the Iraq war with the struggle to end American apartheid. Let's just go all out and say this is more important than ending slavery! Or stopping the Nazis! Hopefully that will keep your ego sufficiently stroked.

For the record, I thought Camp Casey down in Crawford was a fantastic protest. When the people around her started elevating her to godhood, they lost me. Sorry if that's too much for you. I refuse to place people on pedestals.

155. Don't forget Gladys Pyle!

She was South Dakota's first woman legislator, the first woman appointed assistant to the Secretary of State, and the first woman elected to serve as Secretary of State. In November of 1938, Gladys Pyle became the first Republican woman elected to the United States Senate. Ironically, Gladys' suffragette mother, who served as first president of the South Dakota League of Women Voters and who was the first woman nominated in South Dakota as a presidential elector, tried to discourage her daughter from even entering politics and government. Mamie Shield Pyle feared people would think Gladys was "cashing in" on her mother's work.

109. Exactly!
Cindy is in fine company if she is an attention whore, which she isn't ut she is still in fine company. She is a hero. I once read a quote that was something like "Quiet women rarely make history". She has made history. Her place is secure but she never tried to get that place, she was just doing the right thing.

Okay, tasteless joke.

And, on a personal note, my daughter did her first book report on Anne Frank a couple of weeks ago. She was told that, although an option, the book was too hard for fifth graders. She did it anyway. Great written report (there were a couple of really simple mistakes made in the last paragraph, but I blame myself), great speech, great poster. I'm so proud.

Was Cindy Sheehan burned alive or shot to death with a name on an internet board?

She has something in common with a lot of those people. You do know that Gandhi was an absolute hero to a lot of people well before he was shot don't you? And a lot of people also thought he was an attention whore.

My grandparents, who were around during India's freedom struggle told me about how many Indians (and others of course) disliked Gandhi, despised him, ridiculed him etc. Not everyone knows at the time, who is going to be one of history's heroes.

Rosa Parks had Martin Luther King, Jr. and the national NAACP backing her up. Cindy worked with other groups, but really she alone has been the figure head of the anti-war movement. You underestimate the sacrifices she's made and the strength of her solitary position.

Civil Rights struggle is not only ignorant, but it is very insulting to the movement and possibly borderline racist.

Add to that the fact that she is very public about "giving up" because she was called names.

149. I made my point clear. It is ignorant (at best) to compare her to those pictured people
And, quite frankly, this hero worship of her at the expense of liberalism is bordering on pathetic.

Everyone is so damn anxious to prove how righteous they are in support of her, and is caught up in calling those who don't fall in line behind Cindy a group of lockstep, goosestepping party whores. Of course, they're doing it in a very lockstep way, but that's beside the point.

Basically, so many people here don't give a damn about anything but proving how non-conformist they are, and they can't deal with being a majority party (cause they gotta go against "the man", you know)

Anyways, we get it: "you want to be an individual, just like everyone else"

There is no metric to consider what is more deserving of an accolade. They are different people, different time, different situations. They both, Rosa and Cindy, at least did something... and that is what's important.

Edited on Wed May-30-07 05:20 AM by Skidmore
has dared to stand up and speak truth when not many people would even listen. When her message was not wanted. She has spoken what no one among the leaders of our party dared utter for fear of being called a name. There are those of us on this board who agree with her strongly. Many of us have actively worked to bring these truths to the light and to hold accountable those who would cynically manipulate the people of this nation and debase the Constitution. The very existence of DU is owed to people standing forth and raising voices of dissent, as has Cindy has done. This has nothing to do with conformity but a common purpose--to end an unjust war. Some take the message to the streets using political theatre, others write letters to the editor or articles like Will Pitt does, still others speak truth at the water cooler at work everyday or within their families, and others still have formed organizations.

Cindy's voice is unique and has risen above this chorus of dissent. She is unique because she gives voice to the pain of an unjust war that only a small portion of our citizens can truly own--our military families. She is unique because she stepped forward to confront a man who would style himself as chosen and play God by claiming the power to move boundaries and of life and death. And, she spoke at a time when our very party's leadership would not hold this man accountable.

Yes, Cindy is honored and respected by us for her willingness to speak out. To borrow a nicely turned phrase from Al Sharpton, "I intend to slap the donkey..." Our dissent (DUs and Cindy's) has slapped an elephant and now must slap the donkey. Conforming is not an option. Conforming is silence and brings death and destruction now. Cindy deserves as much as anyone of the fine dissenters noted in this thread to be credited for cracking open the shell of conformity than has concealed much corruption and rot at the center of this occupation. This is what all of those dissenters did. They took a stand and refused to budge until a great injustice was addressed and in times of great turmoil. Every single one of them is to be honored for their unique contribution, and Cindy has earned her place also as one who stood up and stood out.

These people, these everyday heroes that never aspired to greatness but nonetheless had greatness thrust upon them, should never be forgotten. Cindy, you have earned a hero's status, but you can do more. Take some time with your family - they need and deserve you, too. Then take your brave heart and go back again and do more: for them, and for us all. We need you.
