Time to HEAL - There's still Hope, folks - Gold Star mother Lyla Lipscomb Speaks Out
Edited on Tue May-29-07 05:18 PM by symbolman
I had the honor of flying to Detroit, Michigan during John Conyer's Town Hall Meeting on July 23rd, 2005 (which was mirrored in homes and halls that day all over America) where I filmed among other great speakers a Gold Star Mother named Lyla Lipscomb - who spoke so eloquently about her loss, and our nation's loss. (Sorry about the sound, the sound guy abandoned me, after I'd flown from Hawaii just to film this, but you can hear it fine if you listen)

If her name sounds familiar you may be recalling that she was in Farenheit 911, Michael Moore's Film, she was the Mother who seemed to be all gung ho for the "war", but then lost her son to it, and soon was in front of the White House laying it on the line for a woman who was rude, and buying the garbage flowing from that White House.

She gave me chills at this town Hall Meeting, and I would like to share it with you, with the hope that people don't give up, there are MANY of us fighting against this war, Takebackthemedia.com included, and have been for years.

Listen to this Lady, and take heart with what she says at the end, "Don't BE ISOLATED!"

If we tear each other apart, it's the same thing.

5. It's easy for all of you to keep repeating "Don't give up", and "don't be isolated"
BUT... will you look realistically at the lack of TRUE COMMUNITY?

*THAT'S* what is doing people in!

Maybe Lila Lipscomb has a strong community with her family and neighbors. MANY OF US DON'T.

What do we get when we come to DU? Lots of putdowns, and people skirting the rules against dumping on others. THAT IS *NOT* THE WAY TO BUILD PEACE!

We have a part in all this. It's time to start looking at our own selves, and how we're contributing to the lack of peace.

6. "Don't give up" and "don't be isolated"
It's all we really have. Your other option is "give up" and "don't care."

7. So, how do you make *OTHERS* care?
Look at all the threads about poverty, and look how few give a rip!

Of course I'm isolated! Poor people aren't sought out.

I suppose you want to somehow make that MY fault?

Look around, and include others, rather than putting it on their shoulders.

Openness builds peace.

8. You can't MAKE others care
You do what you do, and do the best you can.

If what you're doing isn't being heard, try something else.

It's all any of us have, really.

13. "it's all any of us have, really"
And some of us have nothing, but it's easier to be distant than to show a bit of compassion about that.

Some of us have tried everything we know, and get NO credit for having done so.

You might try that sometime.

16. I'm sorry you're having trouble in life
You need to go talk to a professional; I am not that person.

This thread is about a video of Lyla Lipscomb, not poverty. If you wish to talk about poverty, go start a new thread.

10. This is meant to help heal people
Not get adrenalin pumping. Relax please, you're very welcome to your opinion, and so is Demobabe.

You aren't isolated if you are on this board, are you?

Believe it or not, we live in Hawaii and WE are poor too :)

12. Of course I'm isolated on this "board"!! Do you see lots of action about poverty here?
Ever so sorry to have ruined your thread with my endless whining about poverty.

Just look the other way, and the suffering and deaths won't be seen.

:P

Edited on Wed May-30-07 04:36 PM by symbolman
in your posts, while you DO Ruin this thread, talking about everything but the SUBJECT.

So there you go, why the DU is going to hell in a handbasket courtesy of YOU.

I can see why people ignore your posts, you're showing exactly WHY they should.

I bet you didn't even watch the video, after I flew to a Conyers event, bankrolled by DU members who wanted to HEAR what these people had to say.

Not you.

18. If you had wanted "healing", you could have responded in a way to facilitate that.
There's a way to respond with compassion, rather than denigration.

I thought maybe we had learned something about that from the kerfluffle about Cindy.

I replied to the post demanding that people get connected.

You could have understood that it's at least as much up to the group to include others. That seems to me to be logical, as well as peaceful and HEALING, which is what you now say you wanted.

There was a time in peace groups, when we looked for those who came by themselves, and made efforts to reach out and include them.

Now, I guess it's just DEMANDING that people include themselves.

As I said, if it's "healing" you're after, you might want to think about these finer points.

Could have something to do with why there aren't as many people involved as some would like?

19. Hey folks
I came up with a GREAT WAY to respond to intentional THREAD KILLERS, and here it is:

"If you continue to avoid discussing the subject, this will be my last response to you."

Nice and Simple, the person who is disrupting the thread, and making it all about THEM, is now left with nothing to do but look like an ass.

Feel free to use it.

That is all, Bobo.

For those interested in the SUBJECT of this THREAD, I found this woman Lyla to be SO Eloquent that I actually got CHILLS as she spoke, she's the real deal.. No wonder Michael Moore saw fit to include her in his movie..

I wonder what she's doing now.
