Lawrence Wright is doing a "one man show" about his research on Al-Qaeda. His book The Looming Towers is a must read if you want to understand what's up with the middle east.

There is a clip from the show online, you should watch the whole thing it is only a couple minutes long but the best is at the end when he says

It is easy to see it as a clash of civilizations with one on top and the other below and humiliated but Islam is not a civilization it is a religion. "Humiliation is a choice. The humiliated have a moral license to regain their dignity. They are entitle to hate and hatred is delicious, the most narcotic emotion. The truth is, hatred sells."

You can see this at play in so many areas of our own culture. The GOP, christians complaining about how put upon they are.

Now, what to do about it?

1. Hate radio
initiated the horrors in Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, and other places around the globe. That's what's at work here, unanswered hate. Just tell people under economic stress that they're being victimized by another powerless group and they'll be very obedient and start to hate whomever they've been given permission to hate.

What to do about it? Reinstitute the fairness doctrine. Answer the hate. Tell people it's not the Jews, the feminists, the poor, the black, the homosexual or anyone else who are in the same boat they are who are causing the problems in the country. Tell them what wealth concentration and wage suppression are doing to them. Tell them the other side of the story.

What to do about it? Laugh at people IRL who have bought into the hate and ask them how they've done under trickle down economics, are they damp yet?

Poke fun at any Christian who claims to be persecuted and ask how 80% of the population is forbidden to go to church and ask them when their bibles were all burned.

Most of all, make sure the hate gets an appropriate answer. Hate will destroy the hater's soul and then destroy his body, but not until after hate does a lot of damage to his family, friends, neighbors and country.

People hate because they're under stress and they're afraid. Slick admen just make sure they don't hate the appropriate policies.
