Dear Cindy,
There are a lot of us who are very committed to our beliefs, but there are very few of us who will ever accomplish the things you have accomplished. It is no surprise that you have taken a lot of undeserved attacks because you have worked so hard to spread your message and that makes some people very afraid.
Sometimes we like to believe that everyone on the left embraces the leadership of those who fight for peace and civil rights, but unfortunately that has never been the case. Please try not to take the attacks you read on Democratic Underground too personally. Yes, your tactics were controversial but so were those of the greatest civil rights leaders in history. We must always remember that people like Martin Luther King and Gandhi were not always embraced like they are now. They both participated in acts of civil disobedience, they both said things that raised many eyebrows, and they both took on forces that not all of their supporters wanted them to take on. If either of them were alive and still protesting today they no doubt would have many detractors here on Democratic Underground and elsewhere. To deny that would be to deny history.
Very few people could have psychologically and physically endured the attacks you have endured Cindy, you have inspired so many people with the incredible strength you have shown these past few years. Even if you never speak out again you will be remembered as one of our great leaders in the future. You have earned your spot in the history books, and I know that your name will one day sit right alongside those of Gandhi and King.
Casey was killed senselessly, but he did not die in vain. The love you have shown for your son will no doubt save countless lives. Think of the support the war had when you began your protests, and then look at the support the war has now. Think about all the mothers who have witnessed your grief and decided they didn't want to send their kids to the military. It will be impossible to ever know the full impact of your work Cindy, but rest assured there was an impact.
I hope you are not stopping for good Cindy, I have faith that one day we will hear your voice once again. But if we don't, then thank you for all you have done. I don't use the word hero lightly, but you have earned a spot on my very short list of heroes. Thank you for your service to our world.
Sincerely,
Myself and whoever else wants to sign on in the comments section
