Products you would like to see seriously changed or banned.
For me it is styrofoam egg cartons and stick pens. Why is there no way to recycle styrofoam or has the science changed and I'm just not aware of it? Plastic pens. What the hell do you do with them when you are done with them besides toss them in the garbage? Can they be recycled? I don't know. I went to buy a pen yesterday and looked for one I could buy refills for. Well the store had one that came with two refills in the package but did not carry refills by themselves. How many gazillion of these pen carcasses are in the landfills? Is this on someone's list regarding recycling?

1. Bics sell at the rate of 14 million a day !
For history see here : http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A993378 Mind blowing really. I think that if you could buyt refills they'd cost the same or more than the pen becuase of the packaging cost which the pen doesn't need.

I'd never given much thought to where they all go but you make a good point if you'll pardon the pun. :)

Maybe one day the pens will be made of rice paper so'd we can eat them when they run dry.

3. I'd like to see some of this product development slowed a little by
requiring industries to work out recycling or ways to dispose of some of these products (particularly electronics, plastics, and chemical) before they are allowed on the market.

13. I believe that will happen
given time. I think it's already in place in the automotive industry.

11. What Right
do we have in telling someone that a product should be banned? Because it is fuel inefficient or we don't like it. Wouldn't a better approach be to put a surtax on fuel sold and let the market rule? CA wants to ban incandescent light bulbs. A better approach is to put a energy tax on them to bring them up in price, making them less desirable.

The premise of banning things is wrong. You want to ban tobacco, go ahead. You'll create a black market for it just like exists for marijuana. SADD and MADD have seceded in banning drinking by underage children. They sure haven't stopped it. We don't want to admit it but the Europeans have a much better approach to Drinking and to DUI's. However, that should be the subject of another thread.

Human nature resents having things banned. Design the market to get the desired results.

14. You're right, banning things is wrong. I'd just like to see all the
externalities associated with oil (costs of health care related to air pollution, costs of the military to go get it in the middle east etc.) factored into the price of a gallon of gas. Then the SUV issue would take care of itself.
