Just now on radio: "A lot of areas of the country don't support our troops like NASCAR..."
http://www.goprn.com/contact%5Finfo/

I see that as the election approaches, some areas of the country are being painted as "more American" again. Mitt Romney is advertising how he was the governor of just a horrible state, Massachusetts...

Anyhow, I was passing by the radio show of the "Performance Racing Network", braodcasting the Coca Cola 600 from Charlotte, North Carolina. They were interviewing John McCain, who evidently was making some panderfest appearance at the speedway.

The announcer asks: "Well, Senator, as the race started the troops took the field here, and the anthem was played, and Taps, and Amazing Grace, and you know, there's just some areas of the country that don't support the troops like NASCAR does...."

Naturally, the good Senator let that go unchallenged.

29. I doubt Mitt is playing to Northern NASCAR fans with that comment. Red meat for the red states.

"Blue" areas of the country are supposed to be unpatriotic. Classic Republican smear for the last four years or so.

2. What has NASCAR done to protest to protest the Republican cuts to veteran's benefits?
Did they ask what a President McCain would do about that? I'm gonna go ahead and guess not.

5. No, they went on to point out that McCain had recently been over there...
and going on about him supporting the troops. At that point, red, white and blue paint started to drip out of the dashboard radio and I changed channels before the network sent virtual fireworks and yellow ribbons into my car. You know, to "support" the troops.

25. Well, at least Dale Earnhardt, Jr. took his crew to see F-911:
www.michaelmoore.com

The response to the movie then went into the Twilight Zone. Surfing through the dial I landed on the Fox broadcasting network which was airing the NASCAR race live last Sunday to an audience of millions of Americans -- and suddenly the announcers were talking about how NASCAR champ Dale Earnhardt, Jr. took his crew to see “Fahrenheit 9/11” the night before. FOX sportscaster Chris Myers delivered Earnhardt’s review straight out of his mouth and into the heartland of America: “He said hey, it'll be a good bonding experience no matter what your political belief. It's a good thing as an American to go see.” Whoa! NASCAR fans – you can’t go deeper into George Bush territory than that! White House moving vans – START YOUR ENGINES!

4. What has NASCAR ever done to support the troops....
besides wave flags and spew out jingoistic crap? They haven't assured their safety or ensure that they are fighting the right mission to start. I honestly don't see what "talent" is needed to run around in circles all day as NASCAR "drivers" do.

20. I'm not defending this, but they actually do have a program
to help connect military members with their families while abroad (video messaging, etc.)

http://www.militarymoney.com/news/920

Granted, most of it is "flag-waving" stuff, but it's not as though they've done "nothing."

I do agree they could question more, but they're not just waving flags.

And, I hate that everyone here implies that all NASCAR fans are stupid rednecks. My little boy - 8 years old, a straight A student, soccer player, and a supporter of anything NOT Republican (LOL) - loves NASCAR and is watching the race right now.

40. i'm a race fan and no repug, let me tell you.
the rw has co-opted nascar because it is still considered a southern sport. trust me, there are a ton of flag-waving rednecks at the tracks . . . particularly on the teams . . . but there are many of us who just love the sport. and believe me, it IS a sport. you try driving in circles at 200 mph for 4 hours bumper-to-bumper and tell me there is no skill involved.

anyway, my boyfriend and i and another friend (who is from nc) are solidly to the left of the perception of nascar fans, as are many other people i know who enjoy the sport. 'nascar dads' are just another construct of the rw (specifically k-k-k-karl rove), like soccer moms. once the soccer moms deserted them, the rw needed another named group to call their own.

unfortunately, nascar itself is decidedly pro-bush and friends. once the old guard gets replaced by non-rednecks, that may change . . . not soon tho'.

41. I agree it's a sport. My Dad used to work pit crews for
stock car racing before there as NASCAR. I grew up working on cars (and I'm female, as well). My son comes by his love of racing quite honestly. I simply came to the conclusion, years ago, that I liked the cars much better than the races. LOL.

And, I do realize that NASCAR is decidedly more pro-Bush, but aren't most all sports? It seems that way.

35. Well NASCAR drivers are going real fast
and I mean real fast and around (literally) two or three inches away from each other at times. I know I couldn't run 600 miles at speeds of 170 or more with someone on my bumper nearly all the time. I doubt you could either. A kid here just died because he thought he could drive real fast like his NASCAR heroes. Take it easy on the drivers and give them their due.

I'm guessing not, because, especially on TV, most of the music they play is rock and hip hop. As to waving the flag, lots of people do that. Lots of different events have flags waving. You are perpetrating a wornout stereotype.

I was referring to the MFing rightwingnut moran who believes some areas of the country are more "supportive" of the troops because they believe the troops should be sent to die for a politician's bullshit stinking pile of MFing lies.

37. I would like introduce many of you to a book
by Steve Jarding and Dave Saunders, called Foxes in the Henhouse: How the Republicans Stole the South and the Heartland and What the Democrats Must Do to Run 'em Out
In it both Mssrs Jarding and Saunders helped Mark Warner win the governorship of Virginia by using NASCAR among other strategies to win the rural vote. Bash the South if you wish, but you doom the Democratic Party in nationwide elections.

44. I heard that guy Saunders on radio
Maddow's show I think and he was an impressive guy. I also saw him on one of the news channels and was still impressed. Articulate, quiet, yet forceful, and above all, makes sense. A Democratic candidate could do worse tthan hiring him in some capacity concerning winning elections. And as a Midwesterner, I will confess that I have made fun of people from the South, but I also admit I was wrong. There are good and bad people everywhere. I see no reason at all the Dems can't win some Southern states in '08. I mean Nebraska was entirely red in '04, every single county and it isn't a Southern state at all. Ok, I'm done rambling now.
