Poll question: If Gore ran as an independent would you vote for him and could he win?
I know it will never happen but just curious.

41. It would depend on the polls a month before the election.
If Gore had a significant lead in most states according to electoral-vote.com then I would vote for him.

If not then I would vote for the Democrat even if Hillary got the nomination.

Other: It depends.
It depends on who the Democratic nominee, and what other candidates might appear on my ballot.

I will vote for the best person for the job, from my perspective.

8. But what's it got to do
with Clinton, or any "frontrunner"?

If Gore ran as an independent, he wouldn't be on a Primary ballot - so there's no "frontrunner" to consider.

He'd be on the general election ballot, along with a Dem candidate and a Republican candidate.

6. Congratulations to those who vote on principle, unfortunately Republicans are more pragmatic.
They vote to get and retain power even if it is not for principle. So vote on principle, but don't complain too much when those nasty Republicans and neocons are running things because they understand how the system works.

7. You need another option
Yes, I vote on principle and not party and he would split the vote and not win.

Doesn't matter though, since he would never not run as a Dem.

11. This poll is also an analysis of the independent voter structure
Would and could he win with the combination of independent and democratic voters
and even some republicans. Like I said it is not going to happen and is purely conjecture

How Americans identified themselves in aggregated 2006 Gallup Polls

• Democrats: 34.3%
• Independents: 33.9%
• Republicans: 30.4%

Among independents
• Democratic-leaning: 50.4%
• Republican-leaning: 40.2%
• Don't lean either way: 9.4%

Source: Average of 2006 Gallup Polls of more than 30,000 adult Americans. Margin of error +/- 0.57 percentage

18. It's fascinating stuff really...
just this week, my evangelical christian boss said he is seriously considering voting for a dem in 08, and my apathetic non-voting roomie said he would specifically register just so he could vote for Gore if he runs.

It's been a very good week. :)

If a Green were poised to win, I wouldn't vote for a Dem if it split the vote either. Republicans are always bad for the country, that's the first principle I vote on.

19. I believe he
would have a tough time winning as the Democratic nominee. As an independent his chances are zero. I also believe he is not running because of Hillary. I don't believe he wants to take on the Clintons and who could blame him. It would tear the party to shreds and he knows it.

20. What a strange post
More than half of the country "hates" Hillary. Where is the fear of taking on the Clintons?

As a liberal Independent, I will not vote for Hillary in the primary, nor in the general. It would break my heart if the 1st woman president was a corporate elistist and warmonger.

24. How many republics do you know that would vote for Hillary?
Add that number to Democrats and Independents that won't vote for her and more than half of the country is probably a low estimate.

Her corporate elitism and warmongering offer no hope.

Hope is what is needed to turn our country towards democracy.

27. A large enough number of conservatives
that I was taken by surprise. They are tired of the corruption of El Mono and his fellow monkeys.

The policies of the administration have hurt cities and towns all across our country. My county had to lay off half of our police force (many who are republics), our county jail had to close almost half of the cells, which in turn laid off as many jail guards.

There is no funding for mental health when it is needed now more than ever. There are not enough funds to take care of our roads, aging bridges and other infrastructure.

This affects everyone, no matter which party they are registered.

If a poll not good for Mrs. clinton it must be true, if a poll for Mrs. Clinton is good for Mrs. Clinton then the meme gets used. It's so typical of people like you.

21. I will ONLY vote for him if he runs as
an independent candidate. The Democrats won the last two presidential elections and did not support their winning candidates. I worked for and contributed money to those two candidates.

The Democratic party has done nothing substantial since the '00 election fiasco to insure the integrity our our election system. Voters in '06 heroically overcame an insidious and systematic Republican effort to illegally stack the deck in favor of Republican candidates. Since winning majorities in both houses the Democratically controlled congress has yet to restore habeas corpus, and other constitutional protections we have lost. While the hearings are entertaining, and revealing of just how corrupt and bad this administration really is, impeachment continues to be "off the table." Last week Democratic senators and representatives whined about not having enough votes to overcome a presidential veto of an Iraq occupation spending bill with time lines for U.S. troop withdrawal, or even enforceable benchmarks, indirectly blaming voters for not electing enough Democrats in '06.

I've lost confidence in the Democratic party and have come to believe that we effectively have a one-party system in this country. Yesterday I mailed in a new voters' registration card indicating no party affiliation. I refuse to continue to be a "useful idiot" serving the interests of the status quo. While I believe that Gore and Kucinich are both great candidates, I'm convinced that they could never win as Democrats.

Look at where the 3rd parties got us in 2000 and 2004. But I honestly think the events of the last couple years will spell the death of the 2 party system (which I really think couldn't come soon enough), so maybe he might have a chance this time around.

That's from the most recent Quin. poll, but I have never seen Gore do most head to head polls. I know polls aren't the end all be all but I don't know how anyone thinks he could possibly win running against a Dem and a Repub when all he is going to do is split the Dem vote. Then again, I don't know why anyone thinks he would run and an indy. DUers have this strange obsession with indy runs, imo.

37. wouldn't vote for Gore
his stances on global warming and free trade agreements directly contradict one another. He claims that global warming is our greatest problem, yet he voted for the NAFTA and GATT agreements, which allow a new myriad of ways for corporations to ignore their environmental pollution. He still supports free trade agreements that would add to the destruction of the environment.
