Help!!! There was a response to my Letter to the Editor.......
in my newspaper.

I may write back.

This conservative thinks our province should emulate Nebraska, Idaho, and South Dakota.

I need some info: I know these states are "red", but how so?

Any info especially from people who live or have lived in these States would be valuable.

thanks!
Darth :)

It would be easier to help if I had a subject.

3. You might find some answers in the book "What's the Matter with Kansas?"
by Tom Franks.

In asking "What's the matter with Kansas?" -- how a place famous for its radicalism became one of the most conservative states in the union -- Frank, a native Kansan and onetime Republican, seeks to answer some broader American riddles: Why do so many of us vote against our economic interests? Where's the outrage at corporate manipulators? And whatever happened to middle-American progressivism? The questions are urgent as well as provocative. Frank answers them by examining pop conservatism -- the bestsellers, the radio talk shows, the vicious political combat -- and showing how our long culture wars have left us with an electorate far more concerned with their leaders' "values" and down-home qualities than with their stands on hard questions of policy.

Sorry, I live on the West coast and can't relate in any way with those states.

5. For starters, they're all profoundly anti-choice.
Uh, lessee--those states take TONS of federal money, (couldn't survive without it, in fact) have high infant mortality rates, high illiteracy rates, high percentage of high school students who don't complete the 10th let alone 12th grades (Nevada's h/s drop out rate is the highest in the U.S., I believe). But I think the draconian attitude toward a woman's right to choose was probably high on the author's list of things he likes about those places.

8. original post mentioned Nebraska not Nevada
Edited on Sat May-26-07 11:13 PM by hibbing
The poster mentioned Nebraska not Nevada. I hope you aren't claiming that Nebraska has that high of a drop out rate, illiteracy rate, and infant mortality rate. Yes, Nebraska is conservative, I have lived here most of my life. Lincoln is less conservative than the rest of the state. Omaha is relatively conservative.

I do find it funny that a lot of farmers are so conservative but get a ton of money from agricultural subsidies and what not.

Is there a link somewhere to your letter and the response? I must be missing something.

Peace

6. I think abortion laws
I'm pretty sure South Dakota made it a felony for doctors to perform any abortion, except to save the life of a pregnant woman.

Maybe Nebraska & Idaho have done likewise?

7. Tell him Ne, Sd and Id are more Independent than Republican
I grew up in NE Co, and those farmers were Indies. They just vote Repug because there is no other choice.

Show them there is a choice.
