Al Gore and the internet
The High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 (HPCA) was a bill created and introduced by then Senator Al Gore (it was thus referred to as the Gore Bill <1>). It was passed on December 9, 1991.

This bill led to the development of the National Information Infrastructure, the National Research and Education Network, the High-Performance Computing and Communications Initiative (an off-shoot of the HPCA), the web browser Mosaic<2>, and the creation of a high-speed fiber optic network that, when utilized, would help stimulate the economy.

3. In 1995 all we had was dialup and at these prices
America Online was $9.95 a month for 5 hours of basic access, then $2.95 an hour after that
in 1995 that same constant connection would have cost you around $2100 a month…and it was dial-up!

for those that remember............................................

6. A year before that, it was $3.50 per hour
And it wasn't just dial-up — connection speeds topped out at 2800 kBps. It was another couple of years, methinks, before you could get even a 14.4 modem.

I had a few months of AOL bills that topped $400.

In AOL's early days, one night per week — seems like it was Tuesday — the entire system went down around 2 a.m. ET for a few hours. They gave plenty of warning, and in chat rooms everybody would try to be the last one to post before... damn, we had a word for it, but I've forgotten it.

8. He tried for years before that too
Nevertheless, Gore had undoubtedly supported the Internet on several occasions during its developing years. His office spearheaded both a key piece of legislature and a persuasive article outlining the Net’s potential. His involvement with the Internet included:

1976
Gore began his political career in the House of Representatives as a congressman from Tennessee. During this term, he introduced a bill calling for the construction of a "data highway."

1986
Senator Gore sponsored the Supercomputer Network Study Act, a project which called for a mapping of the information needs of the general public onto the existing networks run by various universities, corporate research facilities, and military technology centers.

1991
Gore wrote an article for Scientific American, "An Infrastructure For The Global Village." This article describes his vision for the Internet as a mass media communication tool.

11. Al Gore is and always has been a man of vision and enlightenment
He was also considered the most credible man in the Senate before the late nineties. I watched a show in late nineties, I believe it was the McLaughlin Group, anyway there were some right wing hacks on it that were talking about Gore and how the Republicans would deal with him. They said what Republicans do is attack their strengths. If they take away their strong points they can beat them. They all agreed Al's strongest point was his integrity so it would be the first thing they attacked. The rest is history.
