Tuesday State House Rally to Present Petition to Legislature On Tuesday, May 29 at a noontime State House rally, maineimpeach.org will present to state legislators an impeachment petition signed by over 11,000 Maine citizens. The petition calls upon the Legislature to adopt a resolution calling for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
The group has invited Senate President Beth Edmonds and House Speaker Glenn Cummings to the rally to accept the petitions, and is scheduled to meet with them later in the week to discuss the call for action on impeachment.
The signatures were gathered by a petition drive conducted over the past several months throughout the state. Maine citizens signed both in person and on line at the group’s website.
The Chair of Maine Lawyers for Democracy, John Kaminski, will also address the rally. Maine Lawyers for Democracy is a statewide group of over 70 lawyers who have called for impeachment. They have circulated to legislators a detailed position paper calling for impeachment. They cited the deceptions used to justify starting the Iraq War, the illegality of the War under international treaties adopted by the United States and illegal wiretapping of U.S. citizens. The Bush-Cheney Administration’s use of torture, detention without trials and suspension of habeas corpus provide further grounds for impeachment.
