Enough John Wayne already!! I realize it's the 100th anniversary
but this has been going on for three days now. Of course the fact he was a raving Repuke who never passed up a drink isn't all that bothersome, but TCM, AMC and TNT have shown nothing but Wayne for the last three days. Good cowboy, certainly no great actor, give me three days of Bogart or Pacino..hmmm, that'd be good. Enough of Duke already...

2. I had no idea about that, but was thinking today that I am so sick and
tired of the whole John Wayne mentality so many people in this country (and certainly pResident Dumbass) have. What the fuck is wrong with a little peace and prosperity? What the fuck is wrong with actually HELPING people, both here and abroad? I'm tired of the cowboy swagger, which is nothing but destructive.

3. The 100th anniversary of what?
I had to use the Orange County, CA airport, frequently, a few years ago, and I detested that statue of him, out in front. Made me want to :puke: .

Edited on Sat May-26-07 07:31 PM by Bluzmann57
Of course, he was born here. But he wasn't much of an actor, imo. And I have said that very thing on occasion and my goodness, you'd think I said that Billy Graham was a communist or something.

12. Hollywood shaped our image of warfare.. even now..
Every war is compared to the Giganto-WWII-gasm that the moviemakers gave us. they made the training films, they sent videographers with the troops, they made the newsreels and they re-wrote stories to make into movies that everyone alive now has seen at one time or another..then those movies have been REmade to fit current or recent wars..

Is it any wonder why so many people are "war-lovers"?
Movies & movie stars sanitized warfare and made it "safe to watch".. they made it "boffo box-office" and a tradition..

15. Not in the same vein
Many people around the world don't know Karloff unless you mention the Frankenstein movies.
Not so with John Wayne.
John Wayne is recognized by name and by face.

I've lived in Korea for a decade and prior ro that I lived in Europe.
There are very few people who are recognized the world over by name: Ali, Michael Jordan and John Wayne are 3 people who are.

17. He was a draft dodger
And a closet case, which has been masked well by his wingnut worshippers who buy into his tough guy image.

A shitty actor too, which combined with his fascist politics and racism, makes his legacy completely worthless. He is one of the worst pop cultural icons in American history, bar none.

18. I think the Drive-by Truckers said it best in their song "Iwo Jima"
Talking about a guy who actually served in WWII

"And I never saw John Wayne in the sands of Iwo Jima"

Just because he was in the movie, people think he must of been there. Of course he was also in the Green Berets movie, although he was too old and fat by then to be an actual paratrooper.

Yeah, he served just like Ronald Reagan did.

33. Ronald Reagan was in the cavalry
He did serve during World War (( although he ended up in Special Services which is where most show business types went. Wayne got out of serving because he had a family and that was considered an extenuating circumstance to not being drafted. And were they drafting men in their thirties back then?

You know, Jimmy Stewart's son was killed in Viet Nam. Did any of John Wayne's sons serve? His two oldest sons were probably too old - they'd have been draft age in the 1950's - and I'm guessing his younger sons might have been too young.

They showed one of my favorite John Wayne movies yesterday afternoon - "Big Jim McLain" which is about rooting out Commies in Hawaii. It's terrible propaganda but what a guilty pleasure! It makes "The Green Berets" look subtle by comparison.

19. When I clicked on this thread I fully expected that
someone would have posted that pic of him wearing espadrilles, carrying a man purse and showing his business. Rumors always persisted that he was gay; thus the tough guy image was so important to his market value. Anyway, all has apparently been forgiven by the righties.

Note: I would post the picture but I don't know how.

20. Here ya go
I first saw this in Spy magazine back in the early 90's and it confirmed what I always suspected.

As Frank Zappa pointed out in his autobiography, describing Wayne's drunken behavior at the Whiskey A-Go-Go in L.A. in 1965 - Wayne looks at Zappa onstage and says "I saw that guy in Egypt once! He BLEW me!"

You mentioned that he was closeted. I assume you mean closeted from the straight community. Wasn't it pretty well known in the gay community?

That's what a lot of men wore.

ps. Wearing tuxedo pumps didn't make you gay either.
