Free Republic Purge: Conservative Web Site Bans Giuliani Supporters
http://www.observer.com/2007/free-republic-purge-conservative-web-site-bans-giuliani-supporters

...Over the past few weeks, chaos has reigned in the “Freeper” community as members sympathetic to the former mayor's candidacy claim to have suffered banishment from the site. They were victimized, they say, by a wave of purges designed to weed out any remaining support for the Giuliani campaign on the popular conservative web forum. Another significant chunk of commenters have migrated away from the controversial site over the action, according to a number of former site members and conservative bloggers who have been tracking the situation.

...Others claim that the former mayor’s top-tier status is spurring frantic site administrators into action. Finally, one popular theory holds that the Free Republic is secretly hoping for another Clinton presidency that would send its Alexa ratings soaring back to levels it hasn’t experienced since its halcyon days of the Clinton impeachment, when a since-soured relationship with blog pioneer Matt Drudge and overwhelming anti-Clinton sentiment in Republican ranks helped make Free Republic one of the hottest Web sites in the nation. It hasn't recovered that luster since the Bush administration took over.

...Robinson, it should be noted, famously blasted George W. Bush’s presidential candidacy back in 2000, before a dramatic late-campaign about-face that saw him emerge as one of the GOP ticket’s biggest supporters.

1. I love the picture accompanying the article

That's Rudy and Mike marching in the NY gay pride parade.

Maybe that's what sent RimJob over the edge.

This picture should be plastered onto direct mail pieces to be sent to millions of evangelical Christians. We want them to make sure they vote their conscience  .

3. As if there were any doubt
They're not exactly known for a diversity of ideas over there. I mean, the modern Conservative movement is nothing more than authoritarianism in drag. This is a PERFECT example of it: "Support someone else, or fuck off".

How are they on Ron Paul supporters? Are they bringing the banhammer down, or are they looking at Paul's opposition to reproductive freedom and past racist statements and saying "hey, this guy's not quite so bad after all"

4. I don't see us banning Biden supporters from this site
And I would argue against doing so too.

5. I was going to suggest the analogy of Obama or Edwards supporters, as Guiliani
seems to be the consensus #2 according to most of the polling data. Absolutely mind-boggling that a Republican political commentary site would even consider it - I know people would be driven from here in droves if DU ever considered something so ridiculous!

9. This is one example of the differences in the base of the two parties
I have argued for a while now that one of the major differences in our two parties is that the rePublican base is manufactured, where as the Democratic base is a grassroots expression of what people believe are the core values of the Democratic party.

15. I watched the "purge"--JimRob would throw up a hypothetical
"what-if" thread or some other bait thread involving Rudy, and those who stuck up for him were "zotted". It was so blatant and rudely done, you have to wonder why anyone would want to be a member of that freak zoo.

16. It's very simple: Guiliani is (marginally) pro-choice. The GOP "base" not only wants to put women in
jail for having abortions, they want to criminalize the birth control pill--- and eventually all contraception, with the end goal being the institution of "biblical punishments" (like stoning to death) for "crimes" like sex outside of a Christian Marriage or for non-procreative purposes.

So as I've said time and time again, the fundy knuckle-draggers who run the GOP aren't going to let Rudy anywhere near the GOP nomination.
