If the tax deal passed both chambers and you had a line item veto
Edited on Sun Dec-12-10 03:11 PM by Still a Democrat
which parts would you omit and which would you make law?

Can't post a poll, but thought it would make for interesting discussion.

1. Not being a financial expert, or even novice, my gut reaction is I'd
dump the tax break extension for those making $250 or more (although I'd actually rather see the cut off point at $500K or $1 Mil), but other than that, I'd call in some advisers who weren't in bed with Wall Street and the Banks -- Like Paul Krugman and Elizabeth Warren. Good people.

How about you? What would you be itching to ditch?

4. Cuts for over 250k, estate tax break...
If it was doable, I'd probably go as low as 100k for the breaks. We just can't afford it.

I'm also concerned about the payroll tax holiday based on what I've read, but if yes or no I'd have to sign off on that as well. Otherwise, low income really takes a hit.

5. Good point about needing the revenue from those earning under
$250K. Ideally I'd let them ALL expire but too many of us can't afford it. Every dollar counts.

I don't understand that much about the payroll tax holiday, which is why I'm calling on Krugman and Warren to educate me. :7 :hi:

7. No expert here either
I just gathered it was an equal break for all, made up for some of the other breaks the poorer workers were losing, and the general would transer funds to SS to cover it. But I try to stay open to learning more. :hi:

2. Remove tax cuts to the top 2% and nix the SS holiday.
Tell them to present me a bill with the Making Work Pay credit restored or the estate tax provision is next.

3. kill the payroll tax holiday, kill the estate tax rate decrease, and
as noted above, kill the tax cuts for those making over 250K/yr. Keep the rest. But if Obama could do that then he would have to promise not to do so in order for the repubs to give him the support he needs to get it passed. So it wouldn't matter.

6. I'd veto the entire item minus the unemployment extensions.
