Every once in awhile, a labor history post needs to be here in the GD.

December 11, 1981 - More than 500 people were massacred by units of the El Salvadoran military in the village of El Mozote. After being locked in their homes overnight, men, women and children were tortured and systematically executed. Eyewitness accounts led to an international investigation and, in 1992, exhumation of the remains. The El Mozote massacre was one of many attacks on peasants, workers and activists under U.S.-supported regimes in Central America during the Cold War.

3. When NY Times reporter Raymond Bonner reported the El Mozote massacre,
the Reagan administration put pressure on the Times to reassign him, claiming that he was "repeating Communist propaganda." So before he knew it, Bonner was reassigned to some obscure domestic job.

That was the official U.S. position, that accounts of the El Mozote massacre were "Communist propaganda," until the massacre site was dug up...

4. Yep. Elliott Abrams went before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to testify that the massacre
never happened. Reagan recertified El Salvador as meeting human rights standards and continued to ship arms to the death squad government. The US Embassy finally "investigated" -- by sending somebody to fly over the site at 2000 feet -- and then reported inconclusively

It's a nasty piece of American history

8. it's like telling the holocaust deniers that 6 million Jews were killed
in various concentration camps in Europe. They will remain in a state of denial, that it wasn't historically accurate.
Or it never happened.

Hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians were murdered in Central America while Raygun and Bush I looked on. Genocide aided and abetted by the US government.
