Yes, I know that technically there are other choices. You can make a statement by voting the Green Party or by stay home. That is your right. But in reality, politics in America is an either/or situation. At this point, you either vote for a Democrat, or you will be helping elect a Republican. Elections are too close today and unless you want President Romney or President Giuliani and another 4 years of fascist rule, you must vote for a Democrat. There is just too much at stake. While a non-Democratic vote isn't exactly a vote for a Republican, it almost is.

For those of you who say, "What difference does it make? They all vote the same," I'd like to remind you how close the Supreme Court is also. Another 4 years of Republican rule and you can be sure that the SC will go far to the right. Justice Stevens isn't getting any younger.

It would be really nice if we had a better election system. The Electoral College is 200 years out of date, and the two party system is greatly flawed. I would love to see Instant Runoff Voting in America. The third and fourth parties wouldn't divide the party to which you are most closely aligned. But until that happens, I'm voting Democrat.

1. Me, too...
At least we do have a progressive wing of the party, unlike the other guys. I'm going to continue to support the good guys, and hope to see the bad ones get voted out in future primaries.

2. Good points.
Well said. I'm proud to be a democrat. But I'm not proud of the elected officials in Washington.

I'll continue to be a democrat who participates at the grass roots level. I'll support democrats in the general election. But I will be investing my time and money in supporting the more progressive candidates in the primaries, even if they aren't from my district/state. And I will not donate a penny to the candidates who are supportive of the Bush-Cheney policies.

3. Amen!
This is still my party. To everyone who's told me that there is no difference, I have the same response: look me in the eye and tell me that Al Gore would have invaded Iraq. Point proven, discussion ended.

4. Thank you, sir, may I have another?
I'm not sure what the answer is, but I know one thing: The Vote Dem No Matter What technique ain't working.

We got them elected, we gave them the majority, and even the people in SAFE SEATS can't bring themselves to lead on the war. We need a better way.

13. I agree, we do need a better way
But abandoning the Democratic Party and letting the Republicans come up with a better way is not a good idea. I can guarantee you that things will get a LOT worse if we don't fight for the Dems now and in 08.

14. That can't be the only choice.
If it is, we have no representative government for anyone left of Bill O'Reilly

5. I agree, Poiuyt. Much of the reason we're in this mess now
Edited on Fri May-25-07 04:06 PM by pnwmom
is because of the people who didn't vote for Gore in 2000, thinking that there would be no significant difference between him and Bush.

Six and a half years later, our Constitution is facing the greatest threat in our history, the Supreme Court has been packed with Bush cronies, and our planet is dying. We can't take a chance on another Republican administration in 2008.

15. No, not with Jeb Bush fixing the election in Florida,
and not with the media determined to portray Gore as "wooden" and Bush as a regular guy.

But the votes that Nader sweet-talked away from the Dems would have more than made up for the ones Jeb stole.

10. damn, I'm proud to be a Democrat
Proud, proud, proud!

Did our Congresscritters do everything they could to stop the war?

Perhaps not.

But neither did I. I'm not in the streets. I'm not on general strike. I'm not engaging in civil disobedience, with the threat of arrest.

I've done nothing in protest but what I could fit into my busy life.

I want the war to stop, but I (apparently) want someone else to stop it. Like Congress.

But I didn't even provide Congress with cover so they could act boldly. Phone calls, e-mails, yes. Posts on message boards, yes.

I could have set myself on fire on the steps of the Capitol if I really, truly, wanted to stop the war. I could be in the town square with a bull-horn. I didn't and I'm not.

So I figure there's enough blame for all of us right now.

And the idea that Democrats are ashamed by their leaders is ridiculous and outrageous.

The Civil Rights laws happened because PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME WERE MARCHING IN THE STREETS and willing to be arrested.

The Vietnam War was ended because PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME WERE BURNING BUSES, getting shot at Kent State, and creating civil chaos and were willing to be arrested.

When the people have been willing enough to eschew comfort and normalcy, progress has been made by those we send to make laws and oversee the executive branch.

And just look at the proud record of progress by Democrats!! From FDR on, Democrats have fought for the poor, the disenfranchised, the disabled, the elderly, the working class, for families, for equality under the law and for the right to vote one's conscience. They have fought for clean air, clear skies, pure water, affordable housing, and universal health care. They have fought against discrimination, and for workers rights and womens rights.

Damn! I'm so proud to be a Democrat.

I just have to up MY OWN effort to help Congress stop the war.

"I've never been so embarrassed to say that I'm a Democrat...but there IS NO OTHER CHOICE!"

Start with...."I have a vertebrae"...or "I have functioning brain cells".....or ....oh the hell with it.

They allowed George fucking W Bush the opportunity to gloat....with an approval rating in the 20's and bird-shit on his suit.

21. The Iraq War vote was just plain humiliating
but there is more to politics in America than the Iraq war. I think what the original poster was trying to say was that any Democrat (who is running for president) is going to be better than any Republican when you look at the whole picture.

22. Sadly however
The MSM are setting up either Clinton or Obama to be the next dictator in chief and they have already pretty much said they wouldn't change hardly anything this treasonous administration has done.
Think the anti patriot act would be repealed? Nope
Military Commissions act? Nope
Basically we would just have a slightly less insane dictator if one of these Rethuglican Lites gets the nomination.

The ONLY true Democrat in the bunch is Kucinich and the Fascist MSM refuse to acknowledge that he exist because they know if they do then he would win.
