Democrats promise war-funding fight to continue
CNN/AP: Democrats promise war-funding fight to continue
May 25, 2007

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Democrats will continue to pursue a change in policy for as long as Bush is president.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democrats may have lost the first round with President Bush on ending the war in Iraq, but they say their fight has just begun.

In the months ahead, lawmakers will vote repeatedly on whether U.S. troops should stay and whether Bush has the authority to continue the war.

The Democratic strategy is intended to ratchet up pressure on the president, as well as on moderate Republicans who have grown tired of defending Bush administration policy in a deeply unpopular war....

Democratic presidential rivals Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama both voted against the bill.

"I fully support our troops" but the measure "fails to compel the president to give our troops a new strategy in Iraq," said Clinton, D-New York.

"Enough is enough," Obama, an Illinois senator, declared, adding that Bush should not get "a blank check to continue down this same, disastrous path."...

Thursday's legislative action capped weeks of negotiations with the White House, which agreed to accept some $17 billion more than Bush had requested as long as there were no restrictions on the military campaign....

"Senate Democrats will not stop our efforts to change the course of this war until either enough Republicans join with us to reject President Bush's failed policy or we get a new president," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, said....

5. Or We Get A New President.........
that's 604 days away - cause - I really don't think that they'll ever get enough Repugs to join with them. Take a look at yesterday's votes. The Repugs again voted pretty much in a block. In the Senate the only ones that voted no are those that are in a race - like Coleman. And remember - impeachment is off the table.

10. Military- industrial- Congressional complex.
I think the problem is, Congress will never vote against a Defense funding bill. Ever. Either party. Their careers depend on the paybacks that flow from Defense contractors, and the pork that goes to their district. If a Congressman votes against the funding, suddenly he doesn't get big campaign contributions anymore, and suddenly his constituents are angry that he lost jobs for a big Boeing factory. He HAS to fund the "military industrial complex". It's his job, really. Eisenhower first referred to this as the "military-industrial-congressional complex", and I think that's a more accurate description. Each element depends upon and funds the other. That's not going to change anytime soon.

11. Ried has lost what little credibilty he once had.
His words are worthless. He had the opportunity to force a change in Iraq policy and he refused to do it.
