***Breaking*** Democratic Leaders, House Members Vote "No" on War Funding Bill
Edited on Fri May-25-07 10:00 AM by Zandor
(Zandor News Service) - Democrats in the House voted against a bill to fund the US war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan by a margin of 140 to 86. Conversely, House Republicans supported the measure 194 to 2. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) also voted against the measure, describing the bill as "something that does not have adequate guidelines and timetables, something that does not have adequate consequences, and something that does not have my support."

Despite passing the Senate by a large margin, the bill could not have passed without near unanimous Republican support in the House to override the solid majority of House Democrats against it.

Democratic presidential frontrunners in the race for the presidency, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards, opposed the measure.

"The so-called compromise under discussion in Congress that would give the president another blank check to continue his failed war is a serious mistake. Full funding is full funding, no matter what you call it." Edwards said in a statement.

"This vote is a choice between validating the same failed policy in Iraq that has cost us so many lives and demanding a new one," Obama added. "And I am demanding a new one."

Clinton commented, "I believe that the President should begin a phased redeployment of our troops out of Iraq and abandon this escalation.

*******

If more accounts were written in this fashion, we could see the very real differences that exist between the Democrats and Republicans. Let's not forget which party is still the driving force behind getting us out of Iraq.

1. shame shame shame....
That was the intention all along-- write a cowardly bill that that gives Bush whatever he wants, that will "pass by a large margin" but allow most dems to say "but I voted against it!" Spineless calculating rat bastards.

8. i guess if we don't get 100% what we want we are going to
stomp our feet and cover our ears, like the repukes......We dems know that compromise is part of politics.....and this bill helps the workers here with a well deserved min wage increase and help for a number of domestic social issues that we wanted and Bush didn't, It may not have set withdrawel dates but we got some of our projects covered......IMHO

9. I see Clinton and Obama got ink for their last minute sneaky no votes
They made sure they get credit now when it doesn't matter.

When it mattered, before the vote was taken, both Clinton and Obama were crazily running from the press shouting NO COMMENT.

I expect every single article from now on will push the false idea that Clinton and Obama proudly led the Democratic NO vote.

14. That's a nice spin.
But it doesn't really matter how people voted, what matters is the result.

15. "But it doesn't really matter how people voted"
It does matter that most house Democrats voted against it.
