Mexico's 2010 Drug War Stats: 10,000 Deaths and Counting
According to the tally kept by Reforma, the death toll from the drug war passed the 10,000 mark this week, reaching 10,035 killed since the start of the year.

Monterrey, Mexico's Wealthiest City, Succumbs To Drug War

MONTERREY, Mexico — A 21-year-old university student lies dead from a gunshot to the head. Nearby, paramedics wrap the head of another woman in a blood-soaked shirt while her husband holds their cowering children.

I live in South Texas, 150 miles from the boarder. I know several people from Mexico, some here legally and some not. I've heard stories of how things really are, and to tell you the truth, it scares me. One guy tells me "in my village, whoever has the gun...that's the sheriff.", another tells me how he pays $800 to take the main highway back to his home...it's the only way to be safe. One man went to Mexico and smuggled his mother across to the US. His brother had been a sheriff, and been killed by the cartel. He was in fear for her life. Including the stories above, it paints a pretty grim reality of what's going on next door.

I'm not sure what the answer is, but having a country 150 miles from me that's being run my drug cartels, and it's moving faster and farther north, it just scares me. I don't think it should be as ignored as it is

1. The violence has been moving north
And it is mostly ignored. We're insular and it will byte us in ass.

MS-13 is just one example and they moved north a while ago.

2. The only possible answers are either to end the immoral, insane, dysfunctional "War on Drugs" or
go to full surveillance fascism, scrapping the Bill of Rights, placing cameras in every room of every house and requiring daily drug testing literally turning the nation into Big Brother.

I see no in between answer as a means to end this scourge.

Thanks for the thread, Saphire.
