his particular life sentence entitled him to parole review every few years. Life sentence without parole was not an option in Calif at the time. Don't know about other states at the time.

From what I've heard of prison life it's not exactly a stay at the Hilton. Or even a Motel 6. Health care is sketchy at best. Often terminally ill prisoners are released so that the state won't have to provide terminal care.

There probably will be a crisis somewhere down the road as the many people who've been sentenced to life without parole start getting elderly.
