Sun Now Owned by Spanish Woman
http://gawker.com/5700898/sun-now-owned-by-spanish-woman

Angeles Duran, a 49-year-old Spanish woman, has claimed ownership of the sun. You know, the sun? In the sky? The bright one? Yeah, she wants to start charging for its use.

What does this mean for you? Most likely, you will play for a monthly "sun plan," and choose between "unlimited" and "restricted" sun use. If you are on a "restricted" plan, and go over your monthly budget of sun use, you'll likely be charged high rates for your overage. Ha! Totally kidding! You won't be able to afford the sun! Better buy yourself one of those lamps, right now.

See, Duran has a notarized document declaring herself—according to the AFP—"owner of the Sun, a star of spectral type G2, located in the centre of the solar system, located at an average distance from Earth of about 149,600,000 kilometres."

Her claim is that while their is a collective agreement among nation-states that no country can claim a planet, there's no such law against individuals doing so. (Someone has been reading her Ayn Rand!) Speaking as an expert in interplanetary law, I can say with utter confidence that this is an airtight argument likely to hold up in any court. But don't feel too bad! She's only keeping 10 percent for herself, and donating the bulk to the Spanish government and the country's beleaguered pension fund.

Thought DU could use a Break from TSAWikiGate :)

1. I have already purchased it from her. But it came dearly:
14 of my prized black tulips and two skulls, one of Christopher Columbus when he was a boy and the other when he was a man- along with enough splinters of the True Cross to rebuild The Spanish Armada.

And now that I own the sun, I shall look upon it constantly.

Actually, it's a time share. I split it with a bloke in London but things are working out well so far.

7. How exactly does a time share of the sun work?
I'm guessing that you get it during the day time and this guy in London has it at night, right?

2. Good luck for her trying to collect on it's use.
If she were really clever, she would have asserted a claim to Mars.

4. It's a good thought, but I bet most homesteading and territory-claiming
laws require the establishment of a physical presence. She needs to go put up survey markers and do some sort of property improvement before I pay one penny of her solar fees...

11. Hands off Uranus
For all of you claiming other planets, please note that the woman had her miraculous idea after learning that, "an American man had already registered himself as the owner of the moon and most planets in our Solar System". So I'd check with him before you sign up for your own celestial body in our solar system.
