3. Only one cable dates that far back
The cables sent from the US Embassy in Berlin to the State Department feature prominently in SPIEGEL's coverage of the WikiLeaks diplomatic cables.

A SPIEGEL ONLINE FAQ explains the origins of the diplomatic cables, their level of classification, the information they do and do not provide and how to interprete the codes in the individual reports.

WHAT DO THE DOCUMENTS SHOW?

The documents uncovered by the Internet platform WikLeaks are comprised of:

■a total of 251,287 diplomatic cables that were sent by United States embassies, consulates and outposts around the world to the State Department in Washington

■more than 8,000 directives from the State Department that were sent to American diplomatic outposts around the world.

A single report originates from 1966, but the vast majority come from 2004 or later. That was the time the US set up SIPRNet, the database from which the material originates (see below). The number of cables has grown continuously over the years, and 9,005 reports were sent during the first two months of this year alone. After that, the stream of material obtained by WikiLeaks ends. Taken together, the cables provide enough raw text to fill 66 years' worth of weekly SPIEGEL magazines.

Do you know what it was about? I haven't heard.

New York: American cables from the past three years which were procured by WikiLeaks provide an unprecedented look into secret diplomatic episodes and behind the-stage bargainings like the standoff with Pakistan over nuclear fuel, the New York Times reported.

5. There are some from 2003, that I have heard of so far.
Some that may predate that may have more articles written as the data dump is examined.

12. I used their filter and sorted by dates
There is only a handful that are from 1966 thru 1990 (combined). Of course, that is only from this first batch of releases.

Here is the sort by date option:
