13. if find this incredible
It's simply amazing that the leadership signed off on this deal.

Didn't anybody think "wow, this is going to alienate a LOT of people and make us look spineless" ?
And, of all the people to alienate, I think they probably alienated a good chunk of their activists.

20. so what
neither of them would take a stand on the issue before the vote was called.
Everybody knew the issues ahead of time and they had plenty of time to make a stand (even if they didn't speak in the Senate)

I called Obama's office yesterday.. he "hadn't decided".
I called this morning... he "hadn't decided".

They were both waiting to see which way the political winds were blowing.
A no vote was the smart political bet as long as it didn't matter; if it was close enough either of them probably would have voted the other way. I might not think that if either of them had committed to a position before the vote.

I recall Hillary making an ADAMANT speech against withdrawal timetables for that vote. No senate speech on this one, even though she's a presidential candidate who wants to appear as a LEADER on this isuue.

To take the target off any particular group of Dems. Harkin and Durbin? Makes no sense at all. Hillary is a surprise, makes it hard to run against her on the war. Too bad she didn't take this stand back in 2003, we'd have had a better chance getting out of there by now.

22. One Thing I Did Today Was Call DCCC & DSCC To Tell Them To
REMOVE me from all their mailing lists and phone lists. Small thing, but it was something!

UFPJ has organized a Swarm The Congress type thing that has many other groups included to go to hearings and other things. It is starting May 14th I think, but some things have already begun. I want to get to D.C. to "do something" and talked with my husband about it today.

Kind of a sticky issue because I was just there for the March on the Pentagon in March. But if I can find a way to scrape the money together and find some housing... I think I'm headed back! I can't just sit here and blog, make phone calls and sign petitions!

I NEED ACTION!! I've donated so much money lately to different groups and it's a GOOD thing I have my own credit card. My hubby would hit the roof! Nothing like hundreds and hundreds of dollars, but more than I should have.

Oh, I need to find a way to get there!

28. Yeah, I need to do something more myself, but I'm kind of stuck where I am at the moment.
If you aren't entirely turned off to the idea by recent horror movies, one option for cheaper housing than hotels are hostels. Here's one site that lists some in D.C. with ratings and such:

of late, actually not my cup of tea! Oh wait, I did start to watch one called The Machinist or something like that! It was really sick and I switched the channel.

I got an email from UFPJ saying that they may have some ideas about housing. Next project is getting my husband to "concede!"

21. It Shows How A Majority Isn't A Majority
It seems many here are getting a painful lesson in "how democracy works". This is the sausage-making part of the game...and, sadly, it's a game. But it was deliberately set up to prevent one side from getting too heavy-handed over the opposition. Operating with a 1 seat majority is no majority. It does give Democrats the ability to control the agenda, but without Repugnicans coming over, nothing gets done. Unfortunately tonight we've been bit by Senate Democrats (moreso than the House) who don't see the urgency and are more interested in the process than the political realities.

Sadly, this shows just how far Democrats fell and how far we've come...yet how much further we need to go. This cave-in should be noted that a year ago no Democrat dared to co-sponsor Feingold's original ammendment and now we've had votes of 29 and 20 in support. Success in baby steps.

The key here is to set goals now...First is to go after 5 or more Repugnican seats to ensure both a larger majority and also the leverage to push pressure on the moderate repugnicans (if there are any left) to cave like Democrat do. The problem of being in the minority for 12 years, and so far in the hinterlands, Democrats still don't believe they're in charge and Repugnicans still live in their world where they can get away with anything.

It's gonna take another election to straighten out this mess. While today's vote means more bloodshed and a waste of lives and treasure, it now has created a "benchmark" to Democrats...especially candidates...that the natives are restless and aren't going to settle for this shit much longer.

There were no Democratic heroes today...but hopefully some lessons learned.

Cheers...

:hi:

35. The Words Of Bob Dylan...
"...I was so much younger then, I'm older than that now...". It must be age as I would have been out with the torches and pitchforks like many here, but i kinda see this loss as an eventual victory. Unlike past defeats where the "librul media" went sulking away, we now have a vital and growing blogoshpere where we have starting to really gain a voice. As Kos is trying to say, this is now time to measure what this "capitulation" means and where we go from here.

I expressed my dismay by sending a check to my Congresscritter for $0...with the note in the memo that the next REAL check will go to the next a Deomcratic primary challenger. As someone else noted, "the blank check is over". Many think the outrage will blow over and we'll soon be onto the "next big thing". That's where our next moves need to be local.

Many of those who voted to enable boooosh will be home for Memorial Day and then 4th of July. They'll be out gladhanding...and I'll be sure to be in my Congresscritter's face when she comes to my "hood" and remind her in person about how I want REAL representation...and I hope other will do the same.

Time now to move forward to the next "big vote"...and showdown...which will come in September. Now's the time to keep the pressure on those who voted "yes" to vote outside the beltway for once. It's also time to put the squeeze on Repugnicans and make them continuously defend this invasion...turn the worm on this debate from Democrats being the ones making problems for the military to the real culprits...the Repugnicans.

Cheers...

38. What majority?
Has LIEbermann ever voted with the Dems after he gave the Dems the majority in the Senate?

And...

The size of conservative/centrist "Blue Dog" Democrats (44) is larger than the size of the majority in the House(31).

Truth is, the Dems will not be setting any agendas of any kind this session. The only thing they can do is keep the worst ones of Bush from happening.
