Congratulations Congress on a job well done
You did it so well you get to have a long weekend.
Kick back, relax, and enjoy your holiday.
By the time you get back to your cushy unaccountable jobs on Tuesday or so, 40-50 soldiers will have been killed, countless will have been injured, and who knows how many Iraqi's will have died.
Hope you sleep well and enjoy those barbeque's you are planning to attend...because I read a report yesterday that said our troops may not have enough to eat.
Again, have a nice holiday. Don't forget to leave your pride behind because Georgie hasn't finished wiping his ass yet.

8. What else could they have done?
Bush vetoed the timeline bill and there weren't enough votes to override it. Congress doesn't have the executive authority to end this war, so there isn't much else they could do. That's the reality of the situation.

17. indeed! We need a veto proof majority in '08
come September, it's another matter. Everybody in DC is buying time now.
Dems got their minimum wage passed along with the Iraq war funding bill.
Dems gave it time until September. It's not a bail, it's a compromise.
Wait until we get the majority vote we need in "08, then all the crybabies will stop whining about Dems caving. Until then, it's up with which we will have to put - alot of whiners who do not really understand how politics work.
I'll support my party to the end.
Karl Rove, the consiglori to the Godfather had this figured out all along.
He knew that any vote at all would sink our ship. It's pretty evident here this day.

22. They could have kept on sending the bill for him to veto ad inifinitum...
And they could have framed the debate to let people know what a fucking prick Bush is that is willing to leave the troops w/o funding just because he is not willing to compromise. But that would require stamina, backbone and hard work. And to tell you the truth, the message I got was that the Dems were more interested in passing the pork than the job they were elected to do.

Fine, I get the message, Pelosi et al have lost my vote. I know that I am only 1 vote, but that is all I got. So for all I care, Dems and GOP are the same shit, I will give my vote to someone who deserves it.

I hope the pork was worth it for the Dems, because this idiot who worked his ass for this sorry ass party and grassroots in '00, '02, '04, and '06 is not willing to waste his time any more.

Yeah, like I am going to waste my time supporting a bunch of bozos who can't even use a majority in the house to pin a petulant illiterate jackass with a 30% approval rate. Bah... fuck the lot of them, worthless then, worthless now.

The reality of the situation is the Speaker sets the agenda.

The Democrats didn't have to have a vote at all. No money no war.

Can you drive you car with no gas? If you don't appropriate money for gas your machine stops running. Or is that beyond your scope?

That would only work if Bush had a shred of humanity in him. Seriously, this is a guy who sees no problem with torture.

To use your analogy, the war is the car, the money is the gas, the soldiers is the driver, and Bush is the extraordinary annoying backseat driver. If the money runs out, Bush isn't going to be the one pushing the car.

The only way the soldiers will come home is when a Dem is in the Oval Office.

I think you are naive. You don't want to admit that the Dems just bought and paid for the war. They own it now too.

If bush let the soldiers rot, how long do you think their brothers stateside would sit quitely?

How long would their famlies say, whose fault is it? Dems ? Repos?

bush would be run out in a popular upraising.

The Dems could offer legislation to fund withdrawal only. And our troops would come home.

Instead, we keep paying for Custer Battles, and a bunch of mercenaries. And we keep funding the illegal occupation and the escalation.

Wrong. Immoral. Weak. Corrupt.

Do you read the papers? "Dems Bow To Bush!" The papers got it right this time. They sometimes do.

Dems are vertibrates ? Prove it. Besides, DOD can't find $2.3 TRILLION

""According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

"We know it's gone. But we don't know what they spent it on," said Jim Minnery, Defense Finance and Accounting Service."

80. Stand together and refuse to budge....but then
...I'm not sure that was the right road to take. I hate this illegal and unjust war as much as anyone, but had the Democratic Party stood it's ground and refused to fund this madness; I can just hear the repugs for the next 30 years crying that the Democratic Party ruined chances of winning in Iraq. Think about it. It is going to cost lives and billions of dollars more, but what is the alternative? Cut off funds, save lives, save money...but hear about how we are traitors and we are the reason this madness fails. It could cripple the party for the rest of my life at least. I'm not sure which is better, but I think there are pro's and con's to going this route.

Come September, we better be singing a new song. By then we'll have wasted another 500 American soldiers, maimed another 2000, caused more pain and misery to the people in Iraq that no one cares to hear about. "bringing democracy to Iraq" Wonder how they like it so far?

They knew they didn't have a veto proof majority when the elections were tallied. How did they think they were going to accomplish ending this war up against the GOP neocon partisan brigade, by doping the water in the hall cooler?

Persuasion, debate & compromise are great. But with all the facts that have come out about this illegal war, and the clear mandate given them by the voters, they should have continued to push back until the GOP was forced to compromise. It was happening.

Our soldiers don't have a veto proof majority in Iraq; what compromise can they make when they're sent back 3 times poorly equipped & caught in the crossfire of 2000 years of hatred? Iraq is their holiday BBQ.

45. Set a deadline
Edited on Fri May-25-07 08:06 AM by rgbrock57
Yes indeedy, Congress has yet again let us, the people, down by ignoring the will of the people.
Not surprising in the least BUT we do have to acknowledge the courage of several Democrats who did indeed vote NO to the supplemental bill. Senators Clinton, Obama and Dodd all voted No. They should be applauded for their courage, in the face of overwhelming yes-men and yes-women.

Senator John Kerry is introducing legislation which will compel our Fascist President to obey the will of the people by enforcing a timetable for redeployment of our troops from Iraq. Everyone is invited to co-sign the proposed legislation on the following website: http://www.setadeadline.com Again, this website is sponsored by Senator Kerry and is awaiting YOUR signature. We must continue to ram this legislation down the throats of the fascist administration currently occupying the white house until they obey the will of the people.

Regards

We can buy some of those support the troop’s stickers and some shovels, put the stickers on the shovels and I’m sure there would be enough volunteers to hand deliver each member of congress a shinny new shovel with a message saying, something to this effect, “If the unelected occupiers of the White House cant be removed, and the lame duck congress who chooses to be complicit in their support of his illegal war and all the lies, the least they can do is dig the graves for the young kids dying because they believed in what this country was supposed to be… Or it could say this is what is needed because congress can’t or won’t do it’s job.

55. I agree. But I also understand why they did it.
Sheer political cowardice. They're all scared shitless--still--of being accused of not supporting the troops. It seems incredible to us here at DU that anyone would be craven and dumb enough to buy in to that old, discredited line of bullshit, but let's not forget that DU is on or near the cutting edge of left political thought in this country (though it doesn't always seem that way, God knows). An awful lot of our Senators/Reps haven't caught up with us yet. Some of them--the smart, courageous ones--will figure it out in the coming months. Others won't, and them that don't should have to face up to that failure in the primaries next time around. I'm personally deeply disappointed in both Clinton and Obama, our alleged presidential front-runners, for their inexplicable failure to lead on this issue--it's just a catastrophe, in my view. That said, I'm proud as hell of my excellent Senator, the Honorable Russ Feingold, for all his courageous work in opposing the war from the get-go, and for being among the first to step up and call for immediate de-funding of the war. Atta boy, Russ. As for the rest of them--those who voted "yea" and those who failed to lead: you just alienated your most ardent supporters. What are you going to do about it, assholes?

59. Cowards/Traitors
Congress sucks. We were let down -- again. They have done nothing but line their pockets and sit on their hands. Tools. Stooges. Dupes. Then they wonder why they have no power. Why they get no respect. The Founding Fathers are weeping.

73. Hi Romis, welcome to DU.
I’m sure you well know, Democrats have faith in what their corporately owned politicians promise, and the key word here is faith. Faith is the substance of things not seen and the evidence of things yet hoped for, and once faith has come it is no longer faith. So just because the Democratic Party, who the majority of Americans put their faith in, fails to deliver what they promised, and the voters who voted for them are beginning to realize they have been betrayed, it is no reason too gloat… Ok it is a reason too gloat; maybe the voters will start voting for people that would put criminals behind bars instead of allowing them to occupy the White House…
Oh and thanks for the links, always looking for those outside the box…

69. So, how many lives could have been saved this weekend?
If the Dems had made a couple of small modifications to the bill, voted it through by a slim margin, and sent it to the Prez, he would have vetoed it again. Would the killing have stopped?

Of course not.

Have a nice holiday. I suggest spending it analyzing this situation a bit more critically.

70. Why dont we just keep filling Karl Rove's corporate media's rhetoric vault
and the Republicans can now rest assured that they will regain the Majority in 2008....Yep the Democratic Majority is finished and every soldiers death being reported should now begin with "because the The Democrats didnt add a timetable to the spending bill".
The corporate media has so far accomplished its goal of spinning this funding bill as a defeat for the Democrats. Its funny I figured they would be spinning it as " a big win for the President" but that wouldn't work as well for laying the ground work for a Republican Majority.

71. Happy Memorial Day indeed
Thanks for nothing, Congress. How particularly ironic that in the same week, you roll over on the issue of accountability for the Iraq war while taking a long weekend to enjoy the holiday used to remember those who lost their lives in our nation's wars. Like Senator Feingold and others have said, hoe many more will die over this weekend? Over the next few weeks and months? Because you were afraid of... what, namecalling?

You are going to have a hell of a lot to make up for when you get back, especially if you want us to ever trust you again, much less reelect you.

84. Right On
As I said in my email to Pelosi earlier this week, I will never again vote for a Democrat unless the person in question has a long and established history of being both reliably progressive and courageous. At this point, the only Democrats I would consider voting for for President in 2008 are Gore, Kucinich, and Sanders. And neither Sanders nor Gore are running at this time. I sent money to Kucinich and will continue to support him as long as he is running. But the rest will not even get my vote let alone any money. And that goes, too, for my congressman and 2 senators, both of whom voted in favor of the Capitulation Bill. From now on, I will be voting either Socialist or Green and not casting a vote at all if there are no progressive third party or independent candidates to either vote for or write in.

Pelosi and her fellow political traitors are banking on all of us forgetting this betrayal or falling, once again, for the lesser of two evils argument. Well, I, for one, have a long memory and will not be forgetting this betrayal. As for the latter argument, Bill Clinton, who enacted much of Ronald Reagan's right wing agenda as President, is proof that the lesser of two evils argument only results in a slower march towards despotism rather than a slower march towards a progressive future. I realized the futility of the "lesser of two evils" approach back in the 1990's, which is why I left the Democratic Socialists of America. Especially after this week's events, I do not regret that decision.

78. The Democrats have now formally and officially bought into the war.
They are full partners with Bushco. And just to add a little bit more salt in the wound, they tacked on the minimum wage bill which allows the Republics to take credit for supporting not only the troops, but the working poor as well.

I feel like a jilted boyfriend. I spent all the money on dinner and drinks; she went home with the biker dude.

83. sorry, but trying to pin blame on Democrats for soldiers who will die this weekend is BS
And of all people, the OP should know it. After all, just two months ago the OP was declaring support for funding with a timetable, which would have left soldiers in the field to die not only this weekend, but for the next six months. I would never pin the blame on him for those deaths, and I'm not going sit idly by and let Democrats in Congress be blamed for them either.
