Did some Congressmen recently try to live on minimum wage for a month?
I thought I heard that some Congressmen were trying to live on minimum wage--or was it the equivalent of food stamps?-for one month. I have a friend who said this is a lie, that no member of Congress would do that. Did I get it wrong? I think some Representative was doing this, but couldn't find anything in any internet searches. Any information will be appreciated, and links would be greatly appreciated.

2. I heard three of four
lived on food stamps for a whole, sit down, week! One was Janet Sch----sky of Illinois. Sorry I don't know how to spell her name. I saw a male congresscritter saying that he had a hard time on food stamps couldn't get enough fruits and veggies or protein. They both complained how hard it was but I don't know if they're doing anything about it.

6. Actually, I seem to recall it was food stamps for a week.
Whatever, unless they could actually live for an extended period with all the restrictions that life as a poor person entails, they are unlikely to understand anything, merely brag about it.

8. Yes. Congressman Ryan did. He was on C-SPAN's WJ yesterday talking about it.
He ended up cheating. He ate a pork chop because he was giving a speech somewhere and wanted to be prepared for it, so he ate a pork chop. Unfortunately, people on food stamps don't have an option of CHEATING. They have no food...they have no food, period.:(

15. Thanks to all you here,
I was able to find out about the story....and looked on Congressman Ryan's blog, where he confesses about the pork chop:

http://www.house.gov/htbin/blog_inc?BLOG,oh17_ryan,blog,999,All,Item%20not%20found,ID=070521_0620,TEMPLATE=postingdetail.shtml

What is more interesting to me is that he understands why legislation to improve the lot of the poor is important. And he'll work at a food bank to atone for eating that pork chop!

Edited on Thu May-24-07 06:22 PM by in_cog_ni_to
and told him he needed to talk to his mother about how to eat right! He must be a single guy? No wife to point him toward eating healthy? He traveled with a jar of peanut butter and a jar of jelly!

17. And obviously never poor
The idea of stews is the best if you want good nutrition. And you get more bang for your buck going to day old bread stores-around here, you can get whole grain breads for the retail price of Wonderbread. And he never heard of beans and rice? My husband lived on beans, rice, and onions when he was going to tech school after high school using his father's death benefits.

9. It was Tim Ryan
A fabulous Democrat from Ohio. He is a good man. I've heard a few of his speeches.

They also took away his peanut butter sandwiches before flying (which was all he had to eat on this living on foodstamps thing)

Peanut butter is a liquid? weird.
